looks like another ambitious promising thing finally been busted by lack of time (or whatever)... Too sad, I just bought a 7'' touchy thing.

Hey Mike... In your signature, you wrote something like "alpha GUI", what is that? Anything we could count on?

... I guess I need to take that out of my sig now. It was the alpha version of CCar I had tested for Benjamin.
Perhaps Chris Bergeron can give us a status update of the DashPC Linux/Mac mini project...??

Most strange! I sent him an email around the 15th but didn't get a reply back. I just figure he was busy but that's right around the time he stopped working on it...
Sigh. I may be back to programming Harmony, my Applescript frontend.

Don't lose hope! He replyed the following to my E-Mail:
"Yes, the project is still very much alive, myself not so
much, the 4 hours of sleep i get a night isn't cutting it.
I know i have been away from the scene for a while and
not making updates as much as everyone would like, but its
rather difficult to do when your trying to get as much
done as possible. Currently I am working on the media
editor, basically an iTunes, iVideo,iPhoto, iApplication,
organizer that you can use from your home mac and then
sync what you want with your car with the push of a
button. Thats pretty much set to go application wise, but
i still need to write the all the preferences that are
going to be needed, and finish up some data providers and
views.
The front end it self has evolved into a completely
plugin style architecture. Its really easy to make one
too. If you can follow the apple currency converter
example you can make a plugin for ccar. :P Which leads to
the next issue of creating a skinning protocol. I have
been tinkering with that, trying to figure out how an
novice can make a skin and not feel overwhelmed, and how a
seasoned programer can make a skin and never be limited.
So the inherent problem of why i can't make a release is
because basically everything needs to be there from the
get go, or its just going to be a mess. And I am also
trying to fulfill everyones requests that have been made,
which is always fun.
Please pass on the word that the project is not dead, i
just rarely have time to keep up with everyone.

Radio Shark Integration
Please add RadioShark integration to the list.
Perhaps this could be as a "frame" as previously raised
Thanks

Anyone know of any means of pumping BMW I-bus into a Mac Mini?
Subject line says it all. I am on the verge of plunking down money to get a Mac mini for a carputer project...but I have an E39 bimmer, and would ideally love to just hook the thing up to the existing bus in the car and have my existing steering wheel and panel controls and displays talk to/get data from the Mac. I'd probably just pump the video to the onboard Nav display through a TV-module and digital-analog adapter and accept the low rez, just use a really cartoony big front end app.
Although I know there are adapters to get I-bus into Serial (RS-232), I don't know if that will work to then get them into USB (i.e. I don't know if you need a driver on the Mac side to 'understand' that I-bus<->RS-232 adapter). Can anyone enlighten me?
Thanks!
(pointless trivia: the I-bus on 9600-8-N-1 serial is in all bimmers from around 1997-2004 (I think) including a bunch of minis, as this forum has noted, so I suspect it'd be a big happy bunch of campers were support for it to be included! Specs for it are easily found by Googling for 'BMW I-Bus' or looking on the 'bimmernav' Yahoo! group).

You should really start a new thread with this question.... it is kinda a threadjack...
but to help a little I know of one place that claims to have done something with a BMW's ECU and a macintosh... www.mobycar.com
They seem to be full of it though... the software is vaporware and the products arent available anywhere... but you could at least try to contact someone and ask.

Good point. My apologies for the 'jacking, thanks for the correction. I'll check out that site.

Bluetooth phone integration..perhaps bluephonelite? Maybe the bluephonelite authors would contribute...it sure would help their sales!
Also, if plugins are fairly straight-forward to write, perhaps a little tutorial on the plugin architecture would help convince others to get working on elements.

Just FYI. I sent an email to the purveyors of Navigator to inquire on the status of their launch of the OS X version and the reported release of a US data set. If both are true, I asked them if they intend to build in AppleTalk hooks like they have with their OCX API for Windows.
I'll post any response I get from them. If all the above is true, we might very well be able to get integrated Navigation into CCar and it should go high on the priority list!
