ajmiller, yes and no! I plan on having a Source button where you can select from HD, Optical drive, external flash drive, and Line Input. But since I don't have an iPod, you might have to use Line Input. It won't be fancy.

No iTunes (yet). Just curious, but what features from iTunes do you want? The high CPU usage, slowness, or inefficient playlist system?

playlist

as a lot of folk use itunes (I suspect) therefore in order not to dupplicate this 'feature' in your software, a solution might be to 'convert' itunes playlists to your 'format' and provide these 'playlists' to the user ?

this should overcome your concerns of itunes hogging resources, etc...

...just a thought...

noodles,
thanks for the reply, another comment i have is i get errors with certain mp3s. it tells me the "file may not be supported". could this be a problem with mp3s formated with VBR? i have not comfirmed my suspicion but its finicy with which mp3s to play. i've also noticed it doesnt auto size image files to a set dimension so when i have an album with a giant image as the cover it takes over the interface.

just a couple of observations.

... if neccessary to get better ipod intergration i may be able to donate an old 1G 5gb ipod...

let me know.

Right now I've got it set to say "File may not be supported" when Quicktime can't calculate the duration of a file. Not sure if VBR is causing that, it's a possibility. I've already done a lot because Quicktime has problems with certain characters in filenames. I'll test it out later.

I can fix the image thing with a simple click. Since I only have a couple test images that coincidentally happened to be the same size, I didn't have the "Lock size and position" box checked.

How did you want the iPod integrated? I could probably read the mp3s as an external drive and just control it in the frontend. Is that what you had in mind? I've never had an iPod before, so I'm not sure how it works... and whether they work the same through all the generations. Thanks for the offer, though. I'll PM you if I need it.

I'll probably start taking Paypal/hardware donations soon.

Hi there. I haven't been on these forums for some time now, but I thought I would check in to see how the mac FE world is doing.

Out of all the FE's I have seen or tried this by far shows the most promise (no cut intended toward any other hard working programmers ). Here are my thoughts if you don't mind my input.

1) Skins - Cool, but I could really care less. It would be a nice bonus though.

2) iTunes - I know that many people hate the iTunes playlist system, but I for one like it. I can find my songs pretty quickly. What about just 2 buttons? Title and Artist? Depending on which one you press that's the list you get. Being able to access my iTunes library would really be nice. I use iTunes for all of my music. Creating .mp3's of all of my music would really suck. Music purchased through the iTunes music store can't just be dragged out of iTunes to create .mp3's. They are in those stupid .m4p files.

3) iPod - I don't have one, but if your app progresses to become a major contender you probably should consider planning on adding this feature.

4) GUI - It looks real good to me. I prefer the brushed metal of the OS.

5) Video - A simple button set up like your audio player would be just fine as long as it has all of the "regular" video controls. Choosing between a movie file and a DVD would be very important.

I have put off buying a screen and a mac mini because of the lack of a working front end. Please keep up the good work and give me an excuse to go out and buy them. I would consider making periodic donations as you continue your development.

Cheers!

LM

Thanks for the input, MM.

Just letting you guys know I've been working on the app. Right now I'm sidetracked because I just moved and I'm getting settled in before classes start in three days. Also, I'm doing some web design for a charity... but that should be done in a few days.

More stable, should be able to play any mp3. I think I'm going to make a little site for this project soon.

Noodles,

I know in order to keep buttons a decent size for a touchscreen it is important to be minimalist, but one thing I would like to see is a previous and next track icon. Maybe a pair of left/right arrows above the volume buttons. It would make selecting tracks/movies much easier. Just a thought. Awesome program though.

Paul.

Hi:

I'm a mac user and have had a mac in my car for quite a few years (starting with a powerbook 2400c "Comet"). I'm also a RR programmer and would like to know if there is a chance that you would share the code for your player. Maybe I could work on it in my spare time (not a huge amount of time but...).

Wally

I have my mini running the native 800x480 resolution for my screen and when I run iGinition, the bottom portion of the program is cut off. It does not fit. Any way to re-size it?

Paul, you should be able to touch and drag to select the song in the playlist.

Wally, here's the Revolution project file if you're able to take a look at it. I'm just using the built-in Quicktime support. This version has the video player and various little tweaks here and there.

elcapitan, since I have no touchscreen to test on, I'm sorry to say I can't help you with your problem.

I hate to throw in the towel this early, but college, natural disasters, and money are all kicking my ***. Maybe I'll get a touchscreen for Christmas and get motivated.

You could consider this an official hiatus.
