Talking Duel Boot MacBook / iMac?

Quote:
Apple Computer Inc. won't thwart users from loading Microsoft's Windows operating system onto its new Intel-based Macintosh computers _ but don't expect Apple to start offering a Mac running Windows.

Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said in an interview Tuesday that the company won't sell or support Windows itself, but also hasn't done anything to preclude people from loading Windows onto the machines themselves.

Now we just need to get that theory tested out...it would change the entire game. Mac OS X and Win XP on the same piece of Mac hardware! *drools and waits for a Mac Mini with Intel chip*

Eh. You still have to reboot and rebooting is what you have to do with the Evil OS. If Apple would stop sending me updates that require me to reboot for no reason, i'd be happy (Darwin supports the ability to unload libraries, so there is no reason you should have to reboot for something like QuickTime, restart Apps yes, reboot no).

Now what would be cool (which of course means MS won't do it) is if instead of releasing VPC as an emulator for the new Intel Macs, they instead release a suite of translation libraries so that most Windows binaries could just run under OSX (ala Rosetta).

I agree about the via Rosetta.

However, right now the dual boot is not fully possible because of the EFI :-( Pretty sure someone will crack that though to run some Linux/Unix distro at will.

With the announcement of the first Intel based Macs yesterday, many users have rejoiced in being able to dual-boot both Mac OS X and Windows. Unfortunately, this is not the case; due to Apple's use of the extensible firmware interface (EFI) rather than BIOS, current Windows releases will not run on the systems.

That's interesting. That alone may keep Intel OSX from running on a non-Mac PC (though I know there are CPU checks it is supposed to do as well).

I've read reports that Intel will be heavily involved in the design of the next motherboard. I wonder if Intel will try to push them towards BIOS or if this is maybe a sign that Intel will start to move away from it... I would hope for the later, but assume the former. BIOS is yet another thing i've never liked about PCs (i've never had a BIOS computer that didn't have issues with it getting reset and changes being lost and converserly never had any issues with non-BIOS systems like that).

Reminds me (VPC running on an Intel Mac to emulate an Intel chip) of the best Tech Support call I placed (to the Tech Support group I worked in at the time (the old timers loved giving the newbies grief)). I had SoftPC running on my 6100 running some Linux version i've long since forgotten, running WINE, running the PC version of our software.

Mind you it was a pain in the *** to get working, and we had a Mac version, but it was for the challenge. It took the poor guy an hour to figure out the right questions to ask. We took him to dinner the next day

Ahh the days before 5 minute call times and real customer service.

iEmulator to be the first to put x86-native Windows
on Intel Macs. January 12, 2006 -- Next month iEmulator.com will ship a new version iEmulator that will run Windows on the new Intel-based Macs. This will be the first piece of software to enable Windows to run on the Intel Macs.

In iEmulator 1.7.9, the x86 processor will no longer be emulated and will no longer translate between PowerPC and x86 instructions. A spokesperson for the developer told us that native access to the Intel processor will result in large performance gains for running Windows.

"Initial testing is going quite well, and the performance increase is stunning," said Richard Peters of iEmulator.com

Although the processor is now native, not all emulation is eliminated in this release. The PC BIOS, video hardware, and Ethernet card will still be emulated in version 1.7.9.

The 1.7.9 release will be a free upgrade to iEmulator owners.

Currently, there is now way to run Windows on the first-generation Intel Macs, making them less Windows-compatible than PowerPC Macs: x86 emulators won't run in Rosetta and the lack of a PC BIOS gives Windows no way to boot natively at this point in time.

(Yesterday we reported Microsoft's intention to port Virtual PC to the Intel Mac.)

Actually, Intel *wants* everyone to ditch BIOS for years and go to EFI so their chip's security DRM features can be used, but none of the PC motherboard manufacturers are buying into it. (Trying to remember where i read that...but it would make sense.)
