List your Mac Apps

I'm brand new to the Mac scene... in fact, I've never used one in my life, but I just ordered a Mac Mini for my car

I'm just curious what applications you guys n gals use in your car's Mac. Particularly:

- Playing music, equalizing, etc...
- Watching DVDs/avi/mpg/etc..
- Web browsing
- Locating unsecure hotspots
- Any other relevant applications you use regularly.

I searched and found a few answers, particularly to the unpopular Route 66 nav software, but couldn't find a good list for a noOb like me.

Thanks

To be honest with you, there is no perfect answer for your questions. If you think about just “Mac and OS X” then they are self contented, you don’t need to install any third party software. Normally,

- iTunes for playing music (CDs/MP3/M4P etc.)
- DVD Player for watching DVD movies
- Quick time for MPGE, AVI etc.
- iCal for managing your calendar
- iPhoto for watching/storing photos (slideshow)
- Safari for net browsing
- Airport Extreme for wireless internet
- Blah, blah,blah……..

And they all come as default with Os X. You may consider using MS office, Netscape, VLC, Fruit Menu etc. if you like. You better let us know what sort of thing you actually planning on, suggesting the software gonna be easier then. Hope that helps a little bit.

I'm basically going to be using it for music, movies, and web browsing when available. Down the road, possibly a webcam backup-cam. I've got the PowerMate from Griffin, as well as a USB touchpad for navigation (my screen isn't a touch screen).

I want something that lets me play my music and videos and still have ability to let me hack the source code and put in my own stuff.

like what if I want to add a backup camera, or a front looking IR camera for night driving?

i just wish someone would batten down and get serious about coding a rock solid script or something for controlling QT and iTunes. an interface is the last step.

iTunes (i'll use a hardware EQ in the car if I decide I need one)

I don't watch DVDs on my Mac, that's what I have a big TV for
Quicktime otherwise.

Safari, then FireFox, now moving back to Safari.

There is another, but my PB is at home.

- Any other relevant applications you use regularly.

AdiumX for AIM
Mail.app for email
XCode for Mac related development
Eclipse for non-Mac (job) related development
X11 for all those handy open source Unix GUI apps.
DesktopManager for increasing working space.
MenuMeters for monitoring system resources in the menu bar.

(The last two are by far the most useful apps I have ever found for any OS that I have used).

- Playing music, equalizing, etc - iTunes, controlled from my own front-end (TatraApp) using AppleScript. I am using an iPod as an external source, so I do not have to download podcasts and other temporary stuff to the Mac's hard drive.

- Watching DVDs/avi/mpg/etc.. - Custom Cocoa app with simplified interface for selecting the movies.

- Web browsing - Safari when standing still. Modules in my front-end can retrieve particular data (traffic webcams, weather) when moving and display them within my simplified interface.

- Locating unsecure hotspots - I do not care about them ;-)

- Any other relevant applications you use regularly - I am thinking about a special module for checking emails (with voice output).
