Inkwell?

Is there any way you can activate Mac OS X's built in Inkwell without installing a graphics tablet? Does 10.4.3 even include inkwell in it? This would be perfect for a touchscreen, eliminating on screen kayboards and such.

- Go to /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/
- Double Click Ink.menu.
- An INK Icon will appear in the menu bar
- Chose Ink Preference
- Enable Ink by clicking ON ;-)

Have fun!!!!

Ok....just got my mini back.....I did what you said....but is there anyway I can get my touchscreen pointer to be used as the "pen" in ink? If not then it is useless.

I just tried it in my car and it's working. There are two differents ways to enter letter selected from the menu item:
1 - Anywhere on the screen
Select a field or the application you want to write into the then just draw on the screen. Each letter will be automatically copied to the proper destination.

2 - In the Ink Window
You write in the window, the recognize text is then write at the top left, then use the copy button.

I use the tip of my finger, almost the nail, to have the best result.
Maybe a pen like on the Newton or a Palm would be the best.
It was the first time, I tried it, I knew how to activated it but never actually used it.
I will need more testing to see if it will be useful.

any more info?

This is exactly what I am trying to do as well. I like the idea of using a touchscreen as a pointing device, but also as a keyboard/typing device. I could find tracks in iTunes very quickly and enter GPS data. I am thinking of getting the Lilliput GL701 in-dash touch screen. Does anyone know how this unit works with Inkwell on Mac? Thanks.

I haven't used an in dash monitor but I understand that they aren't as stable as an in dash unit for obvious reasons. That might make it hard to consistently gesture on screen and I guess it could wear out the gears or mechanism that holds it in place quicker.

Do you mean ability of the screen on an in-dash (single din) unit to stay still while you're pushing on it compared to one that is hard-installed into your dash?

After reading this thread i decided today to try inkwell. Worked a treat :-) . Not so easy to usewhile driving as have to use my left hand(based in uk so screen to my left) and I am right handed, but still well useable. I used to use a palm pilot all the time which was fine but with this and the ability to write anywere on the screen and input to applications is so much better.
So big thanks to you for opening my eyes to this.

Hi macinavan,

What do you use for a touchscreen and Mac? Did it recognize on it's own? What is your setup like?

Thanks.

Use a wacom or other tablet. I think that's what the os sees the touch screens as. The mouse won't do it.

Thanks.

LinITX 8" touchscreen with mini mac 1.5 ghz ppc version 10.4.7. I just did as MacMobile said and it worked straight away. Either you write anywere on the screen or via the show ink window you get a note pad to write on. When i activated inkwell for the first time it puts a menu icon in the title bar next to the screen resolution, clock, spotlight etc which is useful for turning it on or off and getting the "show ink window up"
hope that helps.
