Adding file syncronisation to Media Engine

Dear all,

(Another idea which has probably already been discussed). I guess most people have their carputers starting and sleeping pretty much based on the ignition state. Based upon this assumption, if I want to copy files onto my carputer from my home over a wireless LAN, the car would have to be left running.

How about adding a directory synchronisation system to Media Engine.

For example:

On my home PC (call it home) I have a share called Media Engine:

//Home/MediaEngine

It would be good if I could be sat in my car outside my house and select a Synchronise option in Media Engine. This option would connect to the configured share //Home/MediaEngine and would synchronise the Media directory on my carputer with the //Home/MediaEngine directory. Based upon the directory //Home/MediaEngine, it would either delete files from my carputer or add files to my carputer. Once the files are synchronised, the db in Media Engine could then be updated accordingly.

The beauty is that I can manage the files (i.e. add / remove) from they comfort of my home, and then when I go out to my car, before driving off I would just sync up.

Thoughts?

Again, pretty easy functionality to add and I don't mind developing this if I was able to assist with development of Media Engine.

Regards,

Andrew

I believe this functionality is somewhat built into media engine...I noticed there is an option for sync folders within the media engine control panel. I haven't tried it yet.

It would need to operate like a roaming profile does in a windows enviroment. When files are updated on either end...whichever contains the most recent updates is the master copy. That way if you ripped a cd on the road etc....it would sync back to your server.

Isn't this exact feature already built in to Media Engine? Its under AutoSync and it has source and destination folders. Unless I am missing something...

Ok, so I win the prize for having a blonde moment.

Just taken a look and yes, it's there... What would be useful is if it could be accessed from the main screen, rather than having to go into the cnfig screen. The main reason I think this would be useful is it would be used quite frequently.

I have tried the Autosync in version 2.1.0.

There's no errors when there is no files in the Sync Directory,
However, I tried putting a file to sync, it just exits ME totally.

Debug log shows.
26-Mar-04 12:58:53 PM - An error occured in settings.CopyFiles : Overflow : Error number 6

Using WinXP, new installation.

Note: an alternative to this would be using a feature built into windows called “offline files.” This will allow you to sync when logging on, off, or when you choose to.
