.net
I see that you program this in vb6, have you thought about changing to vb.net. If so I would be more than happy to help out.
Thanks for the great program.

Porting to .net has been considered, but not that thoroughly. Lack of interest in .net, along with the considerably larger redistributable burden are primary factors. I've been begging for someone to sell me on .net for years, and so far no-one's stepped up to the plate and made contact much less hit a home run.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and the carputer community. I downloaded Media Engine 2.3.6 the other day and it works pretty well except for the included version of Winamp.
It does play the music but it sounds distorted on my sound card. So I tried upgrading winamp to the latest version (replacing the winamp.exe and adding required dlls and plugins) and now the sound is crisp and clear just the way it should be.
BUT now Media Engine won't quite work the way it should. Playing music via the 'browse media' button works but hitting the 'play music' button doesn't. Winamp just pops up a file open dialog, as if it wasn't given the correct parameters by Media Engine.
Now to the subject: I'm not sure if I could fix this, but I think that maybe I could by just changing some of the VB code or tracing it to see why it fails.
If so I would send the patches to you guys so you could implement it in a future official release. But I can't, because the source code is not publicly available (except 1.77F).
So why not release the code to the public so people like me can make small improvements and add-ons that might contribute to the project as a whole? I certainly don't have the time to be a full time programmer, but I could probably make small contributions, just like people contribute to the project by making skins.
Many drops make a river or whatever they say...

It fails because you changed the winamp executable and probably hosed the ini file when all that was likely wrong was an input or output filter needed installed / configured.

I've tried multiple variants of integrating Winamp 5.35 but have not succeeded - have tried just adding winamp.exe and nscrt.dll and leaving everything else intact - doesn't work. Tried adding winamp.exe, nscrt.dll and the winamp system directory. Doesn't work. Tried adding everything from the winamp program directory except the winamp.ini - doesn't work. Tried adding everything including the winamp.ini - doesn't work. And a few more - but can't get it to work. The Media Engine log file says something about winamp did not respond. Maybe the problem can be solved by just exchanging the in_mp3.dll files or reconfiguring etc, but that wasn't really the main question (besides winamp 5.02 is really old by now and doesn't support eg 24-bit sound etc)...
The main question was about Media Engine being made open source or not...

I'd never have known that from the distribution of your comments. Your winamp issue gets quite a lot of pleading details, and the open source argument one sentence. To me it sounds like you've failed to do your research and are backpedaling for help. But all is not lost. Since the module you're concerned with hasn't changed significantly since v1.5?, you should be able to download the 1.77f source and make it work with winamp. Send me your changes and I'll build it into the current tree.
Now, with all due respect no-one would like to open source MediaEngine more than I would. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your perspective) this is a joint venture and there are other parties involved so it's not just that cut-and-dried.

I just noticed this thread. I would like to contribute to the development efforts of MediaEngine. I'm a .Net developer myself but vb6 is what I started with and still have to deal with it due to our "classic" code still in existence. Let me know as I could possibly contribute some weekend time to this project...getting a bit bored with the phpBB community people.

Count me in
I have developed software in many different languages all around the world. VB is at the top of my list. I would be very happy to help develop in the spare time I can spare.
I love the philosophy you use: Software for free, give me some cash if you like it.
I downloaded ME the other day and was well impressed to the dizzy heights of donating! It does just work, and it does everything you need, where you need it.
Upgrade it??? To where and why? Your call, I would be happy to help, drop me an email.

Carcomp is working now. Luckily we have internet at work so I can checkup on things. I been thinking about working with phat_b on making mediaengine open source. I wouldn't want it to turn into a roadrunner clone though. Any thoughts?

Let's go for Media Engine 3 then.
