Using a cellular modem as a phone?

Hi Guys,

I have a Call Direct NextG modem (4th Gen GSM/W-CDMA) installed in my car with a long range external antenna. The modem is connected to the PC via RS-232 serial cable and ethernet. I use it for cellular site testing by issuing AT commands via the serial cable, as well as for normal data connectivity.

Now here is my question: Can I integrate this into the CarPC system so I can make and receive calls through an interface like FreeFone? The modem accepts all AT commands so it seems like it should work, but since it doesn't behave like a cellular phone I wasn't sure. For remote and rural area work the modem and antenna setup offers hugely improved signal reception over my Nokia 6120 so it would be great to have this configured as my car-phone!

BTW - I am not wedded to any particular front end yet.

Thanks!

Marcus
