I'm amazed that no-one has embedded XM support yet. I use TouchXM which is just screaming out to be integrated (and skinned) into one of the media control packages. Either XM PCRs aren't vey popular or it's harder to do than I first thought.
Steve
We have a plug-in being developed for XM-PCR support right now. Do not know when we will release this yet... I hope soon.

If you guys had somthing like that I'd have to switch immediately, touch xm works, but it clearly wasn't designed to be full touchscreen enabled. I need a channel up and down button, presets need to be programable without the keyboard, and better handling of the channel list.... but thats my small rant.
I know I'm a little late coming on board here but, I'm still getting the error you get when you don't set your config. The app works great if I point it to a directory thats empty but when I point it to my main music dir it just dies and throws that same error.
I also have to agree that yeah the scroll works but you do need some kind of page jump.
Other then those 2 things, I'm very impressed and am anxiously waiting a not so alpha release.
Also, just my opinion here, I don't know too many mp3 people that actually use genre, being that most online databases you access to pull your tags royally hose them anyway. If your like me you probably have around 2000 different artists in your collection, and an even larger number of song names. That being said I think a directory based navigation with some kind of easy to use search feature would be awesome. Perhaps a search button that takes you to a menu with your choice of artist, song, genre or whatever to search against.
The ability to append, replace and insert would also be awesome, I used to use the hell out of those features on my empeg.

I am going to assume that you will have embedded MP3 / DVD / XM / RADIO into the basic software package - GPS may or may not be embedded depending upon which GPS is chosen and whether it has an SDK - I prefer Routis and so I'm gonna be out of luck but at least I can launch it, set the window size etc through Javascript scripting.
Other things I'd like to do would be to launch and control external apps such as my OBD2 digital dashboard and also drive the parallel port to control switching relays. I can do all of that through Javascript.
So for me, scripting control would be used to drive external apps and not to program the apps themselves - is that what you had in mind? Or were you intending for the scripts to become mini-apps in their own right?

I know I am late in the game and definitely in the minority on this, but... .NEt 2.0 doesn't work for me. I simply will be unable to test your software for an undetermined amount of time, as I run Japanese Windows (XP, 2k and Me). We're only at .NET Framework 1.1, and who knows when MS will see fit to bring us up to 2.0. It'll be the same for other international versions of Windows too.
Just a thought.
BTW I use playlists. My files are only kept as Artist- Song and use ID3 tags. I suggest making the ability to use playlists available for those who use them, and no biggie not to for those who don't.
Since I can't test the software, is this setup to run as a shell replacement? That'd be my preference... I never EVER want to see the Windows desktop in my car (once system is setup and installed)...

Most people now are fast txt'rs so it wouldn't be a big problem...

Still here
Sorry for the delayed response... I was on vacation for a couple weeks. I got back this past week and have been coding my a$$ off. We have been incorporating all the bug fixes you have reported, wrote a new sound engine so that we are not piggy backed off WMP anymore.
The plan is to have a new build ready for Monday morning. I have also had to write a new MediaLibrary from scratch due to the fact that we are not using WMP's Media Library anymore. It will be an XML database of all your music.
Support for Red Book Audio, MP3-MP1, Ogg, WMA, and WAV will be supported for the new release.
We are focusing on each component being 100% before moving on to the next one. Once the Music Player is done as far as most of you are concerned we will move on to Video Player including DVD. We have our own DVD decoder so you will not be required to install software like WinDVD, PowerDVD, etc.
I am working away, so be patient
Thanks for all the feedback guys, it is much appreciated!
Take care

Finally!!!! Mobile Media Center Alpha Release 2
Hey guys, First I want to thank everyone for all the wonderful feedback to help us get were we are today......
new for this release:
1. completely stand alone, does not piggyback any other software all decoding of mp3's are done by our software.
2. superfast database update times, beats winamp, and Windows media player in 1/3 the time...
3. sonique visualizations have been ported over to our app. we will continue with winamp, wmp plugins in the near future.
4. we also included a mini visualization in the upper right corner that can be used in conjuction with the main visual too.
5. DVD playback, also being decoded by our software, no need for a DVD player codec.
6. Video file playback
Have Fun with it and give us plenty of feedback, we are working really hard at making this the best software for the carPC.
again for MP3Car members you can get your alpha 2 copy at this web address:

It will support radio, we are in negotiation with a few manufacturers of USB Radios, as we fine tune the player over the next couple weeks, the next step will be an Plugin interface for our CECU, (already in beta testing) this allows you to turn the key on, the pc powers up, turn the key off and the pc hibernates. once pc is off, the power supply to the cpu is disconnected via a relay to eliminate dead batterys if you leave your vehicle parked for long periods of time.. the power supply for our cpu is integrated with the C.E.C.U. as well as a bank of 8 relays and 3 inputs. Plugins will be added reguraly.
Thanks again,
Mike

What other plugins? I know for my system DVD/Video (DivX)/Radio/MP3/Visualizations/Skinnability/GPS (this is a big one)/rear view cam/Voice controlled/TTS are absolutly crucial.
It looks like you have a good solid base and i cant wait to see when you start adding some more goodies
