Hyundai Genesis Apple Mac book / air / mini explosion
Hyundai Genesis Apple Mac book / air / mini explosion & Sneak peek
Everyone has been setting up for SEMA for the last 3 days. I happened to walk by the Hyundai booth yesterday while one of the vice presidents was rehearsing for their 9:30am press conference today. They had the usual un-blanketing of cars and performance celebrities there to talk. What I was really there for was the car computer geerkery. The real details about this project will have to wait until Tuesday when the real press conference starts, but here are some sneak peek photos.
I am already slightly disappointed with the mac install. It seems like more of an attempt to get press than a functional implementation. I saw one of the macbook airs plugged into an AC port which would imply no ignition integration. It is always harder to put in a DC-DC regulator. Why do installers just use inverters especially on a high profile car like this? Is it laziness or unknown technical mojo that is driving this?
Answer this question and talk about this install on our forums.
If there is hot mobile computer tech at SEMA that we haven’t written about, Let us know.
For you Hyundai or Genesis addicts I posted a quick 1m video of their VP practicing and doing a quick dance.

I think it is in part laziness. They understand that Car PCs are not well known. So to someone like my Mom or Dad or people not into the hobby, they wouldn't know or understand that there is a better solution to what Hyundai did. They will simply think, oh look that car has a Mac in it, but no other car here does, so that must make it better. They would probably be even more shocked if they saw any of our cars. I guarantee most of the Mp3Car Forum members make that setup look like cr@p. On the other note, maybe Hyundai does know that there is a better solution but they don't have the personal, time or money to invest in a pure integrated system. In a few years car companies will have no choice but to start integrating, especially when they see that people are holding onto their cars and installing better equipment then the new cars their rolling off the assembly line (no profits).
PS: why does the Genesis look so similar to the BMW 5 series? Hyundai loves coping other car companies!

Most people don't know there's a better way and don't appreciate the extra effort to do it properly. They literally don't know what they are missing, so I think most installers either don't know either or skip the effort.

We need to take a look at what they did they put a computer in but they didn't do it like we would and for one I think it is good news that they did it wrong because it draws more attention to most of our setups, Lets be real most of our setups are illegal in concept if the average jurisdiction new I mean really new, we would start to get states starting to ban our activities. so lets keep hoping they dont get it right.

I disagree.... It not illegal because this is a new field and there are no set guide lines as per say. We are basically writing the rule book. We do know that Hyundai's method is flawed though. I agree with bugbyte though, I said the same thing, just in a complicated way, lol.... I think one of the only companies that seems to have some intrest seems to be VW, didnt they have a contest or something like that on these forums?

I think biggkatt was referring to the our in-dash monitors that allow video to be played while the vehicle is in motion. That is in fact illegal. That's why car DVD players (whether flip-up or double din) require a manual override switch in order to watch a DVD while in motion. I could be wrong, though.

This probably won't be a lot of interest unless you are a Hyundai nut, but here it is anyway:

More genesis video is getting posted now. (see blog for links). The intense technical details are going to come with Steve's video interview. He was king enough to take of the covers and show us the "guts" of the vehicle.

Well he said illegal by concept..... that also depends on the setup. Me being the law abiding citizen that I am, designed my car to be legal. The main screen only shows me things relative to driving the car, like NAV, OBD2, weather, and control of the music, HD radio and XM. Everything else is only played through the dash top screens and the rear screen. All the driver has to do is keep his screen flipped down.

I believe it's not the laziness, as being a electronics buff... laziness is'nt a quality I have seen in the more serious fields...perfection usually wins.. What I beleive is there's no technical information they are following kinda like when you buy something fresh off market then 6 months later they revise it then 2 yrs down the road it actually performs like it should have in the beginning, well they wanted PC intgration but to them it was a fairly new and unapproached topic so there's no guidlines or manual or even brainstorming like we have on these forums. I mean seriously guys this forum is one of a kind and it's not all 1 guys idea's there are thousands that have contributed to what we have now considered full intregrated car PC's and thats because of failure and research and everyones ideas. Give them some time and I bet when it hits mainstream it will be fully dc-dc. I am willing to bet also that it will cost more than a lower end Kia to have one in your car as a option..lol
