mp3Car.com interviews Brian Palmer - Iphone engine performance

Mp3car typically focuses on mobile computing applications. The reason why this fits on our blog is that Brian from Palmer Performance has ported his car PC OBD and performance application to the iphone. This is a two part interview. The first part is going to be a tour of his new iphone application. We will follow this up later in the week with a tour of his carpc installation and the features of his car computer software. Brian has made some interesting hooks in his windows application that will allow for integration into roadrunner, centrafuse or other applications.

How does the OBDII info get into the iPod touch? Is it real time or recorded?

The OBD-II/EOBD information will be streamed via a wifi OBD-II adapter. Bluetooth would also be a viable solution, however Apple does not allow data transfer over the iPhone bluetooth and the iPod Touch does not have bluetooth.

Brian, you've got good looking product. It was nice talking to you at the show and thanks for the EGT info.

The iphone app Rev has been in the making also doing the exact same thing. Rev looks a little more promising to me though, but who knows! there is a preview of Rev on the App Store for anyone with an ipod touch or iphone, its called RevLite, go download it and check it out.

I'm curious to find out why you think Rev would be a better solution for you? Especially considering the additional features that DashCommand offers such as customizable dashboards and dyno, etc. We also have years of vehicle diagnostics experience behind our software. Is there a specific feature in Rev you are interested in that we do not offer? We would be more than happy to add functionality to our products.

-Brian

What is your favorite Wi/fi OBDII adapter? I assume the wifi adapter would broadcast multi cast packets and your app would read those? When do you expect us to be able to try a beta? Thanks again for the demo.

Right now I don't think there are any suitable OBD-II to WiFi interfaces available. I have seen one or two, but they are prohibitively expensive. We are working with various hardware manufacturers to get an OBD-II to WiFi interface produced. Currently things are in the early design phases, so it's hard to give a timeframe right now.
