Different Ranking system, possible?

I've been throwing this idea around for a little while, but keep in mind I know very little with web development type stuff.

The post count system works, very well actually. You know who's been around, and who's a n00b. But I was thinking of a different ranking system, that sort of goes hand-in-hand with the other thread that is around here somewhere where it was proposed that we would have more moderators.

My idea is that each forum would have its own moderator, and that moderator, (who would have to be pretty active for this to work) would assign points for quality posts in that section. This way, each user would have a number of points, or some sort of rating attributed to them for each forum.

For instance, you make several posts in the software development forum, and you know your stuff. This way, when someone would look at you profile, or avatar or whatever, they would see that you had 4 1/2 stars in the software category, but only one in the hardware category.

I don't know if this would help or not, but I'm thinking that when reading each post, I know (sort of) who to take more head of in each forum. I think it would be a pretty neat little addition.

Again, I know nothing of the web development side of things. I don't know if this is possible with the current setup. I've never seen it before, and have no idea how it would be implemented. So, flame on....

Hey i think that it is a good idea. It would also make you consider the value of your posts. It would be extra work. What about letting the users decide on the value... lets say 1-5 stars. That would weed out the suck ups and take the bulk of the work off of the admins/mods and put the responsibility onto the community. Of course people like eatyummiepuppies would get 0 starts from on just about every OT and i am sure i would recieve the same from him but it would all even out.

That would be annoying and the system never works.
