Well it was not a completely faultless install (as predicted). Didn't think of it until after I had finished that running the powercable for the pc alongside the VGA and audio cables would cause interference that mean there is some ticking in the audio and some distortion with the screen... but I really can't be bothered re-wiring the whole car just to potentially reduce that given that I will be selling it in a couple of months.
Only other problem was when the PC crashed and the opus did not poweroff the PC (or maybe it was the opus that crashed). Installed a reset switch and it all seems fine.. LOVE the system but have almost had about 5 accidents this week because I get too carried away pressing on the touchscreen as I drive.

I'm thinking of a USB external one (I've seen a Toshiba that will do it or is there a way of connecting an ide cable with power to the dvd any help would be appreciated........cheers

another from Melbourne
Just thought I'd chime in. Another long time reader first time poster as well. Originally from the US and been in Melbourne for over three years now. I'm planning my project (and compiling parts) as I'm still working on getting the car! It'll be a black on black smart roadster if financing goes through. I've put a deposit on it and have talked with Chris (smart specialist at the Merc dealership) in Southbank about how to put it all together. Very helpful. I plan on taking pictures every step of the way. Outer eastern suburbs represent!

That site doesn't seem to be maintained anymore but no biggie. This place is going alright enough for me.
I plan to get my car by the end of this week. It's going to hurt a bit pulling out the factory Grundig CD head unit but I'll manage after I have this thing fitted out.

Shout out to all the car computer guys in Australia. I grew up in Canberra and moved to LA 3 years ago. I run a carputer business.
Doing this stuff all day is like never having to do real work . Shout out to everyone in Canberra.
