I think he doesn't know that the accelerator isn't an on/off switch, that you can actually only press it slightly
I get 30mpg out of my 1.8 Carisma sitting at 100

Think mine does about 30-35 depending how I drive I'm trying to get it as close to 20 though as possible. 3000 miles isn't that far james! (I'll probably be eating my words when I've just got to dover from the midlands and we're only just beginning!)
