G4 Manual

We are looking for feed back regarding the current G4 manual.

If you have used the G4 manual to install yoru G4, please let us know what was lacking and what was helpful.

Is there something missing that you wish you could have seen?

What else would you like to see included?

It seems overly heavy on warnings and odd information such as DVD region breakdowns, and light on useful information for installing it. An installer really only needs page 14 and 15, and mostly just 15 for the wiring information. My installer needed to know the polarity of the reverse camera wire, and that information is missing. As is any information on how the illumination wire actually works and what signal it expects, IE, will it work with a pulsed input or not? Is it expecting a 12v feed?

It's also missing a diagram of the rear of the unit and the inputs there such as the microphone, and USB connectors.

No basic operating instructions come in the manual for working with Streetdeck. No mention of how to enter the BIOS. No information on the remote and it's operation. It's also missing any contact information for support if problems are encountered.

It's a decent start for listing out specs and warnings of the unit, but needs to be bulked up a bit with more practical information.

1 - The warnings are necessary to warn all the morons out there that will attempt something stupid. Sad fact of life, really.

2 - This is a manual for the hardware. StreetDeck is software.

3 - Info on entering the BIOS and descriptions of what those settings are is a damn good idea.

When you look at other Car Audio products, short of amplifiers, there are not install instructions. Because of this, I provided only the wires and what they do.

The manual isn't written just for the installers, it written for the end user as well.

I'll see if I can get this information added.

Same here. I'll see about adding this.

I'll see if I can draw up a diagram of this. But I do have to ask, how necessary is this? They are all labeled on the back of the unit and we provide pictures in the specs thread.

The manual is for the G4, not for StreetDeck. There is an operation manual for StreetDeck in the StreetDeck forum. Now I can see about having that manual added to the G4 image though.

This was left out intentionally. Remember the target market for the G4, it's not the PC hacker, it's the average consumer.

Noted.

This seems to contradict then. If the target market is not a PC Hacker, then I can understand not putting the BIOS information in the manual. But along the same vein, basic usage of the software should be included in the manual in the box, and not as some PDF hidden on the harddrive, only accessible to those who choose to venture outside the Streetdeck interface. If the unit is being sold as an all in one, where the hardware and software make the product, then the manual should cover the entire product. Similar to how the manual for a modern gaming console covers the hardware components "Plug power here, controller here" and also operation of the units software once the system is on.

Maybe we should have 2 manuals. One for the G4 and super basic sofware questions as well as a LINK to the StreetDeck software manual.

I'm currently working on the manual.

So far I've added the following:
  • Polarity of the reverse sense camera wire (+12v)
  • Corrected information about the illumination wire
  • Added support phone number and links to the forums for the G4 and StreetDeck as well as a link to the StreetDeck manual (also added the SD manual to the Downloads section here on the web site)
  • Information about the USB ports (all are USB 2.0)

Right now I'm working on the diagram for the back of the G4.
