G4 with Infill Station
I have a G4 purchased through Australia. It came with the Infill front-end, and no nav software. It does include the GPS however. If I wanted to replace the front end with Street Deck, would purchasing the regular retail version work, or does the version bundled with the G4 have additional features to take advantage of the G4 hardware?
This G4 did include a disk with device drivers, by the way...
Also, what are people's opinions of navigation software for a touchscreen Windows PC? I know Mappoint is bundled with Streetdeck, but have heard mediocre reviews of it for a carpc application. The Infill G4 had the option of Copilot Live for it's nav software - is this any better? I have Streets and Trips, but would it be very usable on a touchscreen? What else is out there worth looking at?

I highly recommend doing some reading here. The vast majority of your questions about GPS Nav software have been answered.
The downside to StreetDeck is the lack of support for Australia, at least as of now. There are other software solutions that could better accomodate OzzieExplorer (one known quality Navigation software for "down under"), but they aren't designed to work witht he G4.

There are hardly any nav options for Australia, it's not just that MapPoint or StreetDeck doesn't support it.
It's a rather big problem right now.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear here. I live in the US. I purchased the G4 through a company in Australia. It came preloaded with "Infill Station" as it's front end. You can see this front end on the manufacturers website. My question was, "If I wanted to replace the front end with Street Deck, would purchasing the regular retail version work, or does the version bundled with the G4 have additional features to take advantage of the G4 hardware?"

There are many file and tweaks to get the G4 to work correctly with Streetdeck. My suggestion to you is to purchase SD and then Request the restore DVD (this will remove all data on HD). You will also need a XP home product key and SD registration information.

Actually, I'm thinking of going the other way. I have the MP3Car G4 with Streetdeck, but I am so annoyed with Mappoint I have downloaded Infill Station and the drivers and am preparing to load another hard drive with it. It looks like you can specify the nav program you want in an INI file entry. I am going to try demos of other apps until I find something I like - starting with IGuidance. (I still haven't found a PC app I like better than my Garmin NUVI 600).
Mappoint in StreetDeck consistently locks up the PC when going to Browse, and for some reason it refuses to recognize my home address - it says the closest thing it can find is the center of town 4 miles away. I actually use very little of Streetdeck - I don't do videos or pictures, I prefer my own MP3 player, and with the nav problems I find the only thing I use Streetdeck for is the radio. I'd like to write my own front end to integrate just the functions I want, but Streetdeck won't release the details for controlling the radio and Maxan/Infill won't answer emails regarding a software development kit; so at the moment I am trying to reverse engineer the control dll's.

The more I use Infill Station, the more I consider just keeping it. I don't like the radio at all, it is functional at best, but I don't know that switching to a different front end would do anything other than give me more problems.

Streetdeck's radio support is pretty minimal as well - just a list of presets for AM and FM. I think there are 10 per band, and they are listed as frequency only - no way to edit the preset labels with call letters or such. The latest version added double sets of presets, and added a slider for the tuner, but I still don't like it very much. I would much rather write my own, but my reverse engineering efforts are stuck at the SetChannelRadio function - I can call it, and the radio tunes to some unknown frequency, so I know it is working. I just have to figure out the format of the parameters.

You can purchase StreetDeck from the mp3car.com store here.
However, it doesn't come with the Infill-specific restore disc as far as I know, only the StreetDeck software.
I would think you would only get the restore disc if you purchase a G4 form the mp3car.com store.
