There are still people buying them on Ebay, the old one. I stated how you can tell the difference, this means that the WRX kit will also not work with this screen, in case you didn't know.

Whoa whoa whoa...are you saying the dimensions of the 2008 LCD with the exterior casing removed don't fit the WRX kit??? Here I am getting ready to purchase one of these very soon and now I hear it won't work anymore?

Yes, that is what I'm saying. I was going to use the WRX kit with this screen for a customer, I took the new screen apart and placed it on the kit, to my surprise it didn't fit. I mean, it will fit in the opening, but since the dimensions changed, you could see the side of the LCD once installed and there is no way around that. After seeing that it didn't fit, I compared both of the old/new 629 casings and that's when I noticed that the new one had a wider one side then the other as opposed to the old 629 that has both sides the same.
So, what I did was custom mold the screen onto the bezel, which came out much better then using the WRX kit, looks as it came from the factory.
I have no idea why they decided to change the dimensions, but they did. I found out the hard way, but found a solution for it.

I'm in the same boat. I was *just* about ready to pull the trigger on the Lilliput this morning, but glad I read the threads first.
I have fired off an email to the maker of the kit to get a confirmation on this. While I hate to doubt the poster, this is the first I have read about it. Also, if you look thru the MP3 car store and ebay, there is a 7" Lilliput (model 701 I *think*) that you can clearly see where one side is larger than the other. But the model 629 showes to have equal sides, and looks to use the exact same case even on the newest LED models. That doesn't mean that there isn't some difference underneath the case, but the reply wjc04wrx made on the previous page seemed to indicate that you can see the difference without ever cracking the case open, which leads me to conclude he might have inadvertantly purchased the 701 model.

FirebirdTN - The pics that you have seen of the new 629 on the store and other places is of the old 629, they just used the same image. If you do see a pic of the new 629 you will see that the casing is different. The casing for the new one is wider on one side then the other.
I am not new to this and I know the difference between a 629 and a 701. I install complete systems in cars and have lost track of how many Lillis I have taken apart. The new Lilli will not fit in the WRX kit, which I have as well, because of its off centered new design. Let me know if you're looking for a better/optional solution of having the screen molded into place which it turns out really nice.

I do appolize if my comment came out insulting; I honestly didn't mean it to sound that way. Just realizing we are all human, and the fact of the misleading pics of the new 629s on the web, thought (and hoped, really) that you might have just made a minor mistake.
That is really bad news to hear. So that means the pic here in store contrasting the difference between the old and new 629 is just photoshopped, and not an *actual* pic of the two side-by-side. Not good at all...
I am possibly interested in the solution you have. I have seen alot of the fab work done in the forums, and while I admit it looks VERY good, I am a tad nervous about bondo or firberglass molds. I was hoping for a direct bolt in solution. I am probably at this stage going to pick up an older 629 on ebay and apply the 3M mods to it, but do let me know what alternatives are available.
Thanks,
-Alan

No problem, sorry for coming out too strong.
Just to clarify the, it won't fit part, the LCD will fit in the kit, but since the LCD is off centered, you will see part of the silver edge of the LCD at the bottom and side of the kit.
I think that the mp3car store has a fine print that the image is not the actual image
What I do to solve this issue is mold the screen into the bezel, looks much better in my opinion. Below is a pic of a final result.

That does look good, but I should have stated up front, my application is not a subaru, but in fact an 06 mustang. The WRX kit works, but requires basically a Ford dual-din faceplate from Circuit City (which I have).
How did you mold it like that, and would it work in my application?
Thanks,
-Alan

I'm able to make them with any application as long as there is space for the screen. Provide me a couple of pics of your dash area and the dual din faceplate.
The molding takes about a week to do and a lot of patience , which I have plenty of.

I don't have any pics, but here is one of an 05 mustang (towards bottom of the page):
http://www.mechatroniks.com/wrx/installs.htm
As you can see the Metra kit is used to take up the unused space of the WRX kit. In other words when using the WRX kit in a mustang, there is actually space left over, and the metra kit is what is used to fill the dead space. The silver part is the WRX kit, and the immediate black surrounding it is the Metra kit/faceplate.
My goal was/is a complete bolt in solution without having to modify the car in any way.

If there is dead space with the WRX kit, then I can achieve the same results.
What I can do is to mold the Lilli onto the Metra kit so you can have the complete bolt in solution that you're looking for.

Easy, look at the front casing of the scren. Are both sides of the casing the same size? if so, you have the old one. If one side is wider then the other, then you have the new one.

WHOA! The LCD screen is a different size? Does anyone have a picture of the 2008 629GL screen out of the casing they could share? Possibly measurements of the LCD itself and of the borders between the edge of the LCD and the viewable area? Cheers!
