And while the messages get older and older, this seems to confirm that this is not a bug:

thank you very much. that answers that. At this time playing protected movies is not possible at this time. Doesn't make much sense why they would provide support for music but not movies.

I could use that second link you provided to remove DRM video from the NBB library so that it doesn't even show up if you guys would like

The only thing I can figure is this:
It is impossible to completely lock down audio with DRM. There a ton of utilities (and even old fashioned analog ways) to make perfect (or near perfect) copies of audio recordings without "breaking" the DRM.

DRM video on the other hand is a little easier to control. To the best of my knowledge, there is no easy way to make a lossless (or near lossless) copy of a DRMd video through analog or digital means, and they probably want to keep it that way.

It also occurs to me that with all the anti-trust stuff going on in the EU regarding Apples "monopoly" in the digital music realm, they can use the QTKit as an argument that they provide an "open" way to enable playback of purchased audio.

Conversely, Apple doesn't have a portable video stranglehold, so it's ok (from a litigation liability standpoint) to keep the video more restrictive.

Of course, this is all wild speculation

While I don't know what the effort would be like, perhaps rather than quietly removing DRMd video, perhaps it could get a little lock icon or the like, so that people understand that the video is there, it's just not playable. Maybe add a pref to hide "locked" video.

(At the rate I am throwing in my two cents, I am going to be a poor man!)

I'd prefer just to not see items I can't play from the interface.

I wonder how Front Row does it? Apple must have a private API.

well apple undoubtedly can decode the DRM video in any application they create they just don't have a public way of doing it like they do with the music. so yes it seems they have a private interface, and perhaps alot of googling may reveal somebody who has found out how to use it.

to my knowlege front row, itunes, and quicktime are the only apps capable of decoding DRM video. even other apple apps cannot.

looks like some people got close before they fell mysteriously silent.

http://www.mackb.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/...ay-drm-ed-file

I wouldn't count on it happening without apple being the provider of the API which doesn't seem likely. DRM ****es me off so much. look at it only punish those of you who pay; its not fair. I guarantee you no pirates using NBB are having trouble watching their videos!

well the itunes.xml has a "protected" field that i can use to filter out videos that are protected. release 9 will no longer show protected videos at all.

well the application didn't crash but, in the music module where you select the artists NBB has created about 12 of the same artist (Nas) and is displaying the exact same content under each one. I checked itunes and nothing seems wrong so i checked front row and everything is under 1(Nas). So im not to sure. what do you think?

O never mind i fixed it some how

yeah NBB doesn't "create" any thing in its library. it reads the iTunes library file. Usually when artists and the like appear duplicated it is because of a space at the end of one of the song tags or a capitalization issue as NBB is case sensitive at the moment but iTunes is not.

In both release 9 versions I have had problems with the audio control row. In 9a the pause/play control did not appear in the row, but still worked when touched. In 9b the pause/play now appears but the forward control does not, and likewise still works when touched. Have you had any other reports of similar behavior?

no I haven't. that is a bit interesting. I would say it may have something to do with the button effects I was trying to integrate but that would only affect 9B and on.

I plan on releasing 9C late tonight/early tomorrow maybe that will mysteriously help.

what resolution are you on? also, open the console and see if there are messages about missing graphics.

I have a Lilliput EBY701 at 800x480. I checked the console and the only NBB items were unhide and hide mouse events.

i know there are more messages than that posted...

i'm completely stumped. I even dropped my res down to 500x600 (the closest i can to 480x800). everything works perfectly for me. can you test it on another system or on a higher res? 800x600 maybe...

on another note I completely screwed up the guts of NBB tonight while working on some cool new things and it will take me another day or two in order to get a release out

No matter what resolution i run the program at, it opens up and then unexpectedly quits. I can get you a crash log if i knew where they were.

crash log should be at ~/library/logs/crash reporter

console output is even more valuable then crash logs. just open up the console application and copy and paste the output from NBB here and I can probably figure it out.

I going to have to ask if you are running leopard since if you are not you will get the same result.
