Public Release 7

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
please read the Known issues for your own good. It will help you avoid an application crash and help me not get a dozen complaints
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally Neon Boombox has another module! it is a video player but is not yet fully functional. I am going to create a custom controller much like the one shown when you are watching a movie in quicktime full screen only bigger and more finger friendly.

I am also going to be making alot of bug fix releases over the next few weeks. My list of known bugs and issues is getting too long. that said it will likely be a while before any new features get implemented, tho I am currently researching XM radio support which should be the next big feature.

Also i am still looking for some willing volunteers to help me hunt for bugs please PM me if you are willing. Suitable volunteers will receive special "seed" builds to help generate more bug free and stable releases.

Public Release 7-

Main Application

New Features: Added a video module.
Added notifications to allow other modules to request silence

Bug Fixes:

Changes: minor dial adjustments for resolution independence
window animations are much faster and smoother now (in most cases)

Known Issues: still color changing and scaling issues that have persisted for a while. (I haven't even attempted...)
Nothing new

some minor thread synchronization issues will cause an application crash if certain child threads have not finished before attempting to launch a module. workaround is to wait about 10 seconds after app launch before attempting to launch a module.

Music Module

New Features: ability to list by and play podcasts
ability to list audiobooks. Will not play

Bug Fixes: addressed some issues with control focus getting lost.
fixed a long ignored issue listing tracks that have both no artist and no album
table view now loads initial data as if the user had pushed the first button on the left instead of always being "artist"
fixed an issue where hitting the space key while a table view containing songs would not play the highlighted song
fixed a bug where the music module would be rendering the visualizer off screen and completely hog the CPU

Changes: iTunes library tracks containing video are no longer listed. use the video module to play these.
General performance enhancements
uses objective-c 2.0 "fast enumeration"
expanded Music Module multi-threading
expose (and presumably spaces) can no longer be used when the visualizer controls the screen in order to prevent crashing
improved track shuffling

Known Issues: podcasts must have both an artist and album in order to list
books must have an artist in order to list
some windows aren't behaving properly due to some fundamental changes in the works, but won't affect application use
audio books cannot yet be played due to quicktime incompatibility with the .aa format

Video Module

New Features: play TV shows from iTunes library
play movies from iTunes library
play video podcasts from iTunes library
play music videos from iTunes library

Bug Fixes:

Changes:

Known Issues: Not yet fully functional. missing many features including basic playback controls.
Tv shows without a season will list under season 0
podcasts and music videos must have artist and album tin order to be listed
tv shows must be listed with a series in order to be listed

Ok I have fixed a number of bugs that were present in the last release. I'm rather embarrassed at some of them even seeing the light of day!

I still have a long way to go.

Public Release 7B-

Main Application

New Features:

Bug Fixes: addressed the thread synchronization issues that could potentially cause an application crash if the user attempted an action before certain threads had terminated side effect is that user may have to push the music button again to launch the module. other issues with the launch thread remain so it is still advised to wait briefly before attempting to launch the music module

Changes:

Known Issues: nothing new

Music Module

New Features:

Bug Fixes: Fixed an issue where the module would shuffle the tracks after choosing a track to play causing a different track to play. shuffling now happens before the tracks are loaded into the table
Fixed a sorting issue when viewing the library by song
Fixed an issue where the music module would always load podcasts or books for the first artist in the list
Podcasts and Books can now be shuffled

Changes:

Known Issues: playing a group of songs by double clicking an artist/album etc will not yet sort the tracks accordingly giving a slightly "randomized" feel to the playlist

Video Module

New Features:

Bug Fixes:

Changes:

Known Issues: nothing new

addressed the browser filter tray scaling issues.
browser filter tray will now change color with the rest of the interface
fixed a long standing issue where filters could only be dragged from the tray to the button bar. they may now be dragged in any way.

Changes: Browser filter tray is no longer a window of its own

Known Issues: browser filter tray scaling is not yet 100% accurate. should look fine on resolutions around 800x600

Not sure if this has been noted but the video module was always playing the first video regardless of which one I selected.

yeah the video module has been just a simple test for now. I am actually working on it right now and have player controls wired up and working I think you all will find them very satisfactory. by the next release (prolly wednesday) that will have been fixed along with a whole host of other problems like random, not that you would notice video random not working ;-)

Just curious if it will be possible to browse by song title in the next release?

By the way, VERY nice work. I was surprised that I actually like it as I didn't think I'd be a fan. However, what goes in the games section?

ummmm. you can browse by song title now... go into the music module prefs and click the configure filters button and drag the song button to the bar. is that what you meant?
you can arrange the filter buttons in any order just like the main interface dial buttons.

games hasn't even been scratched. at the moment the plan is a simple port of snes9x.

thank you for giving it a chance. I find that alot of people are quick to criticize without even trying it, but those that do usually end up liking it. especially after finding all the unique features that aren't available anywhere else, like color changing and dynamic control arrangement

I must say Neon...very good work so far. Once you get the Apple Remote functionality to it...it should be golden to me since I'm primarily using Front Row.

Also would it be possible to link the iTunes Visualizations or have some sort of Spectrum Analyzer Visualization to it just for something different when you can get to it. Thanks in advance.

no I don't know of any way to link to the tunes visuals... if somebody else does I would gladly listen. More visualizers are on the way... the current visualizer is actually a spectrum analyzer, however... did you mean something else or just one that is more simple.

If you would like to make one it is rather easy. They are made in apples quartz composer. you simply need to publish certain inputs for the audio spectrum and song info. I can help you with that

Been trying out 8 for bit. The video player works well. All my movies, tv shows, music videos and video podcasts showed up and worked. Sweet!!

In the filters on the audio side you've got books in there twice and no podcasts. Other than that it feels pretty solid.

actually the filters are dynamically created so if something is showing up multiple times it is a bug. prolly easily fixed by deleting your prefs. try opining the music module prefs and clicking configure filters for a full range of options. there should be album, artist, song, playlist, podcast, books, and genre

Deleting the prefs gave me podcasts back. I dragged podcasts into the main menu but now they won't open even though I have a few in iTunes. Where is NBB looking for them?
