Original Concept Failed, Need Ideas for a New Approach

I have a Collector Edition 2002 Pontiac Trans Am, being that it is a collector edition, I'm not willing to do any noticeable custom fabrication, which is a big limitation. It needs to look as stock and professional as possible without removing any of the stock features such as steering wheel controls, dashboard panels, gauges or a/c vents, etc.

My original concept was to have a mini laptop plugged into a single din flip out touchscreen. the laptop would be stored in the glove box, and would charge with an ac to dc adapter.

well, i ran into 2 idea killing problems:

1. my soundgate remote3 steering wheel control adapter does not work with any single din vga touchscreens i can find, and not having steering wheel controls just won't do for me.

2. i bought a xenarc mdt x7000 and frankly my stock headunit had better functionality sounded better than this piece of garbage.

so, can anyone suggest a vga lcd touchscreen product that will fit this space without any custom fabrication. I'm not willing to relocate anything and the opening is about 1.5 din, not double din.

i bought the x7000 because it had a dvd drive and radio built in, as well as usb ports, but it's just too buggy for normal use. i'm willing to lose the radio and dvd now, but i need a good flipout screen. any suggestions?

The problem is there are no good flip-out touchscreens.

I suggest a doubleDIN kit such as those sold by Bybyte.

But I have to ask....
If this is a collector's edition, why are you removing anything stock at all? I'd think that would detract from the collectibility of the car.

Well I don't plan on ever selling it but on the off chance that I do, I'm keeping everything i take out so i can put it back in later. that's why i won't do any permanent modifications.

and the opening isn't big enough for a double din kit.
