I think I've got all the parts, where to start?

Hello,
I'm planning to install a carp computer in my 97 BMW 328i. I have got most of the parts I need and now I just want to know what software I will need

via mobo witth 1ghz CPU
512mb ram
slot loading dvd-rw
80 gb laptop HD
some PSU/shutdown controller thing, seems pretty cool
usb gps
webcam (for reverse cam)
windows xp pro

I'd like to use road runner for the front end, but I'm in the dark as to what other software I will need? Any cool must-have programs? Any tips?

RR is pretty cool. MAke sure the PC is running fine before installing it in the car. And wires, wires, wires. Speaker wire, RCA cables, USB extensions, etc. The only think holding me back from going in my garage and starting installation is the 100' spool of speaker wire I won on E-bay last week; should have it today. And wheres your screen? For GPS I would suggest Iguidance.

For the PSU good options for you are the Opus120 (120W) and M2-ATX (160W). The via boards draw soooo little power, that really anything will power them.

And about the screen. VGA and USB are your friend. If you buy on eBay, make sure you see those. Sometimes they will sell RCA only screens with USB or just VGA screens, no touchscreen! So watch out.

Software, well RR is awesome it is my favourite and the install wizard makes config hassles a thing of the past pretty much. You will also need Winamp v2.95 for RR to work. Probably get on IE and go to some flash site, and install the flash plugin if you dont have it already. And even though IE = evil, it is the easiest way to get the plugin installed.

Also you drive a BMW. I am not up to spec with BMW's, but I believe you are one of the lucky few who could benefit from the I-bus thing. I dont know if your car is new enough, but definately look into it.

And for reverse cam, make sure to get a nice wide angle lens. And you could get a standalone one (like off ebay or something) and get a Xenarc screen that automatically switches to the RCA connection when a signal is received. More OEM that way.

what about the 7" lilliput touchscreen? I saw some e36 BMW installs where it looked very clean and no need to cut up the dashboard

I've got this power supply,

Hopefully it will be enough power for all the USB devices. I'd rather not figure out how to add a powered USB hub.
