Is it a new install disk? or a copy?

Is your mobo set to boot from that CD drive first?

Try the disk in a different computer.

Make sure your connections are correct.

etc...

Take the computer out of the car and into your house/apartment/office/workshop.
Use an AC power supply (like one that you'd put into a desktop PC) to power everything and see if you can get Windoze loaded that way.

If it all works inside on an AC power supply, then you know your hardware is good and the problem lies with the PSU or the amount of hardweare you're trying to power wit it. If it doesn't work, then you've got to find the faulty hardware. Again, I'd lean toward the CD drive or IDE cable.

Is your CD drive a full-size desktop drive or a slim laptop drive?

Copyin the XP cd to the HDD will not work as the files on the cd are files to be installed and not the installed files( hence the "missing NTldr" message). Since you have a laptop you can copy the files of XP installation on drive C to your USB HDD. you can also try another XP installation CD. the one you are using might have the XP files but it is not a bootable CD. if it is not bootable you will have to install for a computer that already has an OS installed.

Well... That won't get WinXP funtional, but it can be installed from the files that were copied to the HDD...
You'd need some other boot media, though. A boot floppy or a bootable CD, which brings us back to square one.
