windows help

hey all

i have tried searching but have not found what i am looking for

( I have found most everything else by searching, hence only 7 posts to date)

i am trying to re format my hard drive on my car P.C

i have an external usb cd rom drive and no matter what setting i put the bios at i cannot get it to boot from the cd.

when i initally installed it i was using a cd drive connected via the ribbon cable.( internal)

what i am trying to find out is how can i get the pc to boot off the external drive without having to take it inside and hook up the internal drive again.

I am using a legit copy of windows xp pro and have tried it on my desktop and the disk is fine.

I am using an MB VIA EPIA-M10000 1000Mhz Mini ITX mainboard

any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

Emil

Looks like all you should need to do is select USB-CDROM as your first boot device in "Advanced BIOS Features". I take it you either have a supplied power for the CD-ROM?

i tried looking for it but i don't think i have this feature on my mainboard.

as for my cd rom it is powered off a separate usb port.

( i am using two ports for it . One for the data and the other for power)

Every motherboard has an option to change the boot order. It may not be int he place where Taz specified, as every BIOS is laid out differently.

Also, I believe that you'd have to select USB as the primary boot option in your case. There is a possibility that your motherboard does not have the ability to boot from USB, in which case you're going to need to hook up an IDE CD drive and do it that way.

You never found that link, did you? Why? It's hard to find in the NavBar across the top of the forums, amongst a lot of other crap.

TELL MP3CAR YOU WANT A LINK TO THE FAQ IN A MORE OBVIOUS, NOTICABLE LOCATION HERE.

Are you sure that your CD rom doesn't require a dedicated power line and not just power off of the USB?

That motherboard should have the option under the advanced bios features.

It will be in the list with other USB options...like USB HDD

Do you have a link to your CD-rom?
