Hyundai Elantra 2004 - Advice please

Hi Everyone,
Im new (obviously), and am starting to get together some info on installing a Car PC. I am fine with the computer aspects of things (i work in IT, so no problems with any of that)

And seeing as i am not up on Car electrics etc, i don't plan on doing the install myself, especially not seeing as my dash would appear to need modification to get it done nicely.

What i want from a car PC:
Audio / video
a CD/DVD drive
and GPS (i currently have an imate JAMin which i use as my GPS)
and Wireless (an external antenna wouldn't go astray here)

I own a 2004 Hyundai Elantra, and was after an in-dash system (i want front of car access to the CD/DVD drive).
I have scoured the forums a bit, the only person to do an install into a car the same model as mine (at least that showed in my searches)
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/work...-gt-carpc.html

I hate to put the guy down, but its rather un-inspiring.

My idea is to replace the default head unit in the car with an In Dash flip out touch screen LCD. And i wanted to have a SFF system mounted underneath it, resulting in a Double Din setup.

I was looking through a few different options, and cannot really decide which system i want.
There has been a lot of discussion on here about the TC1000 from lilliput, including a couple of comments writing it off as Garbage, and it was my first thought for a system. link:
http://www.lilliputweb.net/products.html (entire setup featured in the center)

Looking through the mp3car.com store i had found these:
http://store.mp3car.com/MP3Car_Custo..._p/ccc-002.htm
http://store.mp3car.com/Lilliput_GL7..._p/mon-020.htm

I liked the look of this screen and the system, but the reviews don't speak so highly of them. are these just the few who have had bad experiences voicing there troubles? id really like to hear from people who have had great success with them if there are any of you out there.

If there is no front mountable solution that is highly regarded, i was thinking of the VoomPC enclosure and a custom build mounted in the boot.. in this case, has anyone had any experience running extended USB cables to the front of the car to mount a Slimline USB CDrom on its own? i was thinking something such as:
http://www.shentech.com/teusb20exsls.html
USB has a max length of 5m, i am however wondering what the performance on something like this would be for DVD playback.

I should be able to post some pics of my Dash and boot soon, i figure so long as i am going to be getting it all done, i might aswell get some decent photos up for others to reference.
I hope someone can reply with some useful info.

Cheers

Hey I have a 2001 elantra that i'm just about to start... i'll be keeping a detailed work log with some pics once I get on with the fabrication. right now I'm just laying out how and where I'm gonna mount things. But we can bounce ideas off each other if you'd like.

What i decided to buy is a Lilliput EBY701. it's about 1/2 cm too wide for my dual din slot so I'm gonna have to cut a bit out of the plastic and mold it. No biggie tho. also I'm gonna be modifying my glove box so I can mount the carpc right behind it. Basically everything will be in dash and i'm gonna try to get it to look as OEM as possible.

Sorry to be uninspiring, but I'm on a budget of nearly $0. In retrospect, I wouldn't choose a desktop PC again - the power issues are too complicated. Buying a display that fits in a standard DIN slot should make things prettier and easier... especially if you don't do it yourself :P. Anyway, here's another one:

And I know of someone else who has a CarPC in an Elantra but I haven't seen him on this forum. He goes by "sed" in ElantraClub.com
Good luck

Hey yeah, the 2004 elantras are different than the 2005. I don't know if the center consoles are different sizes or not but I know i couldn't get a harness kit like that guy with the 2005. I know for the 2001-2004 we're prolly gonna have to cut into the console to fit a TS in if we wanna do an OEM style install. It doesn't look like his screen has buttons so it might be small enough to fit in. So if we can find one without buttons that might work. I'm working with a reasonable budget for my first kit but that's thanks to insurance :P. Anyhow i've got my pc all set up but it's gonna go in my glove box. I'll post some pics when i'm done cutting up my car :P

Hey Guys,

I finally finished my install I'm posting some of the final pics I have a lot of pics during the testing but not so many during the install as I didn't have a camera with me the day I did the install. I did manage to get some pics during the installation of the screen and stuff.

Hopefully this will inspire you ,

I've finally joined the club!

Enjoy guys!
