Not sure if i should have posted here or in LCD screen area (But i figured i was a newbie so here it is... )

My question: Can you buy a stand alone touch screen double din tv/radio unit and plug a Car Pc in it later as a AUX device? (Does that question make sense?)

Ok let me better explain: Take a unit designed for the DOUBLE DIN Slot - with touch screen - install that into dash. Build Car Pc - plug into the unit via aux or whatever the input might be. Is this possible?

I guess the better question is what do i look for in a unit?

Yes, BUT...

The video display will be of less-than-ideal quality. PC displays don't look too pretty on a TV, which is essentially what this unit is.
Also, the touchscreen will not control the PC.
Lastly, you need to output the PC display to cmposite video, which may or may not be an easy thing to pull off, depending on your hardware.

If your PC's video hardware can output composite video, then yes.


Ideally, a touchscreen with VGA input.

Thanks for follow up.
So short answer is no basically.

Argg.. would love to run out and get my hands on a stand alone GPS unit or whatever unit that has touch screen lcd double din - and run that in my car until i am done with CARPC build or buy..

That pioneer gps unit (avdic or something like that) was what started this thought process. was hoping to instal that and then run some sort of feed into the thing (plug and play) and have it control my PC as well.

Ohh well - i can always dream

Not bad! It would be nice to get a standalone one and mod it with a real VGA screen. It just takes a bit more research.

I got my vinyl in today.. (well it has been delivered - i havent seen it yet)
But i am toying with all kinds of build ideas for CARPC, SpeakerBox, Amp Rack, etc...

Ordered the vinyl - going to boat store tom. to pick up my FG.
should be a fun weekend.
