Slim Line Type Adapter

I've picked up a Slim Line Type CDROM/DVDROM/CDRW Adapter

for my slot load dvd player and i'll be using an ide to usb adapter off of that.

I'm just wondering if i need to use the +12, neg, neg +5 on the adapter or if i can just give it +5 and a neg since the drive says it runs on 5 volts. I don't want to run more wires than i have to since these will be ran to the front of my car. Thanks, Drew

no need for the +12 but you might as well cause don't you have to power other things back there?

nah i'm pulling the power from the computer which is in the hatch while the slot load is going to be in the sunvisor. so i need about an 18 foot extension so i only need the 5 volt and a ground?

I'd be weary of running your drive like this. It seems that the cable won't be very secure at all.

Have you thought about using a case instead? It seems it would be much more secure.

i won't have room for a case, i can always use some sort of adhesive. It's the best i can come up with for the space i have. But i wanted to make sure i only needed 5 volts to run the drive and not the 12 volt rail also.

I'm using this exact setup for my ATAPI DVD drive in my dash. Works awesome. And if your ATAPI-to-IDE adapter is the same as mine, you'll need a floppy power connector. Grab one from an old power supply. I use a 3 prong extension cable to run power from my carpc in my trunk to my dash. Just hook up each wire to 12v, 5v, and ground. See the pic. One end is a 4-wire standard molex, other is the floppy connector and my Xenarc power wire. My avatar shows the DVD drive in the pocket underneath my screen.

As for whether you need 12v, just check the drive specs, it should say on its label how much power from what rail it requires. Like this spare laptop hard drive I have here says "DC+5V 0.7A". If it doesn't say 12v, then it doesn't need it.
