ipod hard drive upgrade

Don't know if this is the right place for this or not. I searched but could not find anything like it.

I have an alpine head unit which has the input for an ipod. This worked great until I started the truck when it was -5 deg F out and fried the hard drive. I was wondering if anyone has replaced the hard drive in an ipod with a 2.5 or 3.5 hard drive and if so how did it work out. I know it will not fit into the case and may draw to much power. I was looking for an adapter to connect the larger hard drive to the ipod. I will leave it installed in the truck so I can run other power to it.

Thanks
