What is a Front End?

I have read through the Newbie threads, FAQs and software subforum stickies and threads- much is said about Front Ends, and not an explanation of what it actually is or does. Thanks in advance for providing an answer.

It's a software you run to control your music/movies/radio etc, normally, to prevent having to use a mouse (or fight with the touchscreen) to run applications such as winamp, media player and so forth -- those tend to be hard to control on a touchscreen.. the idea is also so that you have a "centralized" set of controls/screens within the same application, with nice big buttons and large enough information to view while driving.
