making a safe carputer for daily use

i am beginning my carputer install in a 1985 monte carlo ss.

carputer will control my whole audio system.

3 amps 3 sets of 6.5 inch componets. 2 sets 6.5 inch coaxials and 2 15 inch subs.

screen will be either a 7 or 9 still am not sure.

screen position needs to be something i can glance at momentarly without taking complete concentration of the road.

i am thinking a rear view mirror with a 7 inch screen.

also would like a small readout to go in my gauge panel that could display song titles artist etc.

i have a small touchpad that i will install in the center console and will be disassembling a a keyboard of its media keys and implant them in the center console about where my hand will rest that way i can switch songs artist etc without removing my eyes from the road.

my question is what is your opinion on a rear view mirror screen should i go with something in the center console instead.

also is there any kind of radar or something similar that i could hook up that would detect any vehicles in front of me coming to a sudden stop

on a side note mobile wi fi where can i get it and how well does it work

Rear view mirror that size would be gigantic...and would attract the unwanted attention of many.

If going totally custom...why not stick in in the dash and move the guages around it...that is what Mercedes does with their 7 series.

7" screen in a rearview mirror, unless you are driving a truck is a no no. As per Dodge.

Radar for in the front is limited to those reversing sensors at present, but I'm sure the systems that Mercedes and now BMW use in their top range cars will come out in after market versions but will be expensive.

Also take note I didn't mention that in some parts of the UK ferrets are stuck down mens trousers.

Oh dammit I did didn't I

i like the idea about the screen in gauge cluster but that would make the touch feature a pain in the arse.

now how about making a screen i could mount on the dash and pull it off at the end of the day or when i go in walmart.

i just dont want someone being like o screen lets steal

removeable screens are pain in the arse. I had one before I moulded one in the dash.

It was a pioneer pal screen that was quick release (ie had just one connector and you just slid it out) but it was a real pain having to remove it all the time would like to think how doing it with one that has a load of connectors would be. Plus it will put a lot of wear and tear on the connectors.

If you want to not have it visible then knock up a dummy front that you can place in front of it.

Best way is to get the front of whatever was in the space before moulding it in glue it all together and be able to put it in front of the screen when you leave the car. Then it just looks standard.

Seems to me a removable screen is more likely to be broken by droppin or sitting on it than someone stealing it..............

I'd just put the screen nice and high on the dash (centre and top) so it can be veiwed and easily acessed.

Then as metioned, build a fake front. Or maybe just a pull down shield to hide it.

There's always the option of a 1 din pop out screen..... I have one (manual, not electronic) and it has a built in FM tuner and amp with volume knob etc...... if you look in the car with it in place, it looks like a really cheap Chinese aftermarket stereo (which it almost is, lol )
