communication

I would like to remove the face plate from my deck and connect a pc to the head unit through the pins behind the face plate and create an interface on the PC. I was woundering if anyone knew how the face plate and head unit communicate. I2C? If anyone could point me in the direction of this information that would be very helpfull. I have several different head units so just a starting point to start looking would be awsome.
