Newbile front end question

I've been lurking on the forums for awhile collecting as much info as possible, but one thing seems to elude me.
I'm not sure I understand the importance or the benefits of a front end. If you have media player, and a NAV program and whatever with icons on the XP desk top, you could just access them by touching the icon. With StreetDeck or RoadRunner or whatever else you use, you would touch the button on the menu, which I assume would be a shortcut to the exe. of the NAV or the WMP or whatever correct?
So I guess if I'm understanding this right, my question is, do you really need one of these programs? Like StreetDeck or RoadRunner? and if they are important, how do they affect boot time? Does XP have to load first, and than the other program loads? or does the STreetdeck load intially, like XP, and StreetDeck is like your desktop now?

The Front End is touch screen friendly and is a one stop menu driven program for all your other programs. Try using the Windows media player with your finger to see how hard of a time you'll have. XP has to be loaded first and the Front End is ran just like any other program.
