Question Newbie to CarPc's!

Hi all, had a look around the forum and looks like a great site! Found out some great information on here!

I drive a 2000 Vauxhall Astra 3 door! And am hoping to fit a low spec single din pc to use with a 5" non touch screen! Only for use with SatNav, Media and Engine Diag and live info! The one problem I have is my budget, I have no exact budget, but I am hoping to do it for as little as possible, with maximum effect!

^^ A challenge I know, but it's worth a try!

Im not sure if I should post this here, but I will for now and please inform me if I need to start a new thread, and accept my apologies!

As mentioned above I am hoping to find a low spec din pc. To use with a small screen and no touch facilities are available!
I am hoping to use a single din dvd player or JVC Exad unit (we all know what unit I mean lol) and that will be connected to the screen, so I am hoping there is a way to connect the PC to the unit.

If any body is wondering I will be using a keyboard and laptop style touch pad (kept in the glovebox) for using the pc, as it wont be in use much, only for long journeys etc!

I am also hoping to use an interface of somesort so that I can control windows media player or similar media players (or frontends if possible) from my headunit instead of using the keyboard/mouse. <-- Is this possible?

Thats it for now! As mentioned, I am really new to all this! So please, be gentle!

Thanks, hope to hear from some you! And hopefully I will be purchasing some items you guys suggest from the shop

No not really. Any monitor must have a video input. And RCA quality will be fuzzy and look horrible. It will be even worse on a small screen. You really need a VGA quality screen. How opposed are you to 7" screens? They are going to be cheaper than 5" and I know you say you are on a budget...

You mean use the buttons on the HU or steering wheel to simulate a keyboard and send button presses to applications correct? Then yes it is possible, but you will need some soldering. Items like the Fusion Brain, as well as keyboard encoders, and the steering-wheel interface sold in the mp3car store can be used for physcail input not from a keyboard into the PC. But if it is a fancy HU with a touchscreen, no physcial buttons, then you are S.O.L.

Thanks for welcome and fast response!

The reason I say 5" is because I only have room for a 5". As I am hoping to keep the car looking reasonably standard inside. Is there no way I can connect a 5" screen? Or are there other sizes close to it that I could use?

Thanks, I will have a look around the shop now, I didn't really understand most of the items when I browsed yesterday, but hopefully I will have more luck this time!

Thanks!
