Complete newbie, please help!!!

ok i am a complete newbie and have joined to do a bit of research. i have some questions which may seem really basic and stupid but i have limited to no knowledge, please bare with me.ok i have just a standard touchscreen 7 inch dvd playing head unit with bluetooth capabilities.i want to know:

1. if its possible to purchase a gps receiver, connect it to the headunit, and install software onto my headunit so i can use it as a sat nav? if so, any recommendations?
2. if its possible to install the software so that i dont have to keep a cd in the headunit and can have music cd's in there instead
3. if its possible to have music playing through my speakers whilst im on the sat function simulteaneously?
4. if i can install a new peice of software onto the headunit which would improve usability and aesthetics?
5. or if i could install car pc software on the headunit or would i need an actual car computer.

i realise to some these are the most stupidest of questions, but we all have to start somewhere right?

Not telling us the make and model of the headunit is the silliest thing here However, it is very unlikely that the answer to questions 2, 4 will be yes, and 5 is a definite no. If your unit is from one of the bigger manufacturers, I THINK a gps module is available for some, but for that you'll have to look around the manufacturers website, ebay or similar stores for your answer.

Generally though, head units aren't customisable - they're a ready-made solution for people who don't want to build their own, and the manufacturers don't want the headache of uninformed customers screwing around with things they don't understand!

If your headunit supports it, there may be a GPS unit available from the manufacturer. Expect sticker shock.
You will not be able to purchase a USB GPS receiver and make it work with your headunit. Your headunit probably has no means of reading a data CD, so loading any software would be right out, as well.
Besides, the software will be specifically for PC, Mac or Linux, and I'm certain your headunit is none of those.

See #1.

This would depend on the functionality of a compatible GPS unit for your headunit, assuming one exists.

No.

No. You would need a full-on PC.

Yup.
I suggest starting here: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/advfaq.php
