Here is a specific bugaboo that might be applied generally...
When using the Voom carpc enclosure, the ribbon cables for the HD and CdRom drive must slide in/out when the blox is slid open/shut. There is verrry little spare room in the case. In addition, the cables often bear against the memory card, gradually warping it.
The carpc crashes. There are other enclosures with similar space issues.
Other issues:
I spoke with a man several years ago who was assigned to give a few of us a NASA-certified soldering course. He said, in a word, that "connectors" were the biggest problem that NASA had as that time. Vibration, crimps that come loose, pressure exerted ON connectors or BY connectors...can cause electronic failures and intermittent (the worst!!) operations.
I have not been impressed at the quality of MANY of the Chinese-made junk mini-itx and micro boards that get used in carpc's. The solder joints and connectors often just "look" cheap. How do I know? Hang around electronics long enough, and you will learn how to tell the decent from the crappy - it's subtlle sometimes, but true...if it looks cheap, then it probably is.
I wouldn't be surprised if carpc crashes are also often caused by pitfalls that cause other mobile electronics to crash:
>poor power connections; small arcs and glitches that upset the delicate electronics
>heat - fans are nice, but if all they do is circulate REALLY hot air, they do no good
>connectors (as above)
>demanding carpc user who wants to open too many apps, too fast - take it slow and be reasonable...
>hardware / software compatibility issues - install ONE piece of new eqpt at a time, then play with it for awhile to be sure it works
>krappy mobos (as above)
Best of luck and blessings!
