1996 Mazda Protege 1.5L (5 speed)

Hello, I am new to this board, and OBD2 in general.

I am looking for a stand alone scanner to read live data and codes on a 1996 Mazda Protege 1.5L (5 speed). The connector pins are 4-5-7-16.
I have found an inexpensive unit (dont want to break the rules posting links)
It is so inexpenive that i am somewhat afraid to try it. (about $100). I have been researching all over, which lead me here.

No, the sellers have not been very helpful...yet.

Can anyone tell me what to expect from a "universal scanner" on a 1996 Protege?

not that i know much about OBD2 myself but i think your allowed to post the product name on here and it dosent brake any rules...

you dont need to post the link or anything just the product name will be fine i havent had any trouble like that here, these forums seem very very friendly

now back to OBD2, because im in the market for something like that myself i have been doing research and from what i saw 1995 and below seems to be the cutoff date for most of these devices for most cars, i mean before that date i dont think they support ODB2, as far as the device i think if you car is compliant with ODB2 and your sure of that i think really your good...

If the device your talking about connects to a PC/carputer/laptop or whatever the software is really what you need after that....

UIF Tech is the manufacturer. Model U581 and U381.

They are just alot cheaper price than the other stand-alone scanners which claim to have the same functionality . I wonder if they are cheaper made?

Thanks for asking...these are on ebay's

Are you sure your Protege is ODBII compliant? That was the first year.
