240-12v psu modification, help!!!

hi im in the process of installing my xbox into the car, which at the same time is being converted into a carputer, however rather than running an inverter and wasting huge amounts of power, and buying a new psu, can i tap into or modify the current psu to run straight off 12 volt?? i managed to wire it up at the end of the board and get power, yet it seems a bit low and the on/off power button and eject no longer work so im thinking they must affect the power further up the board...

if any one has pics of an xbox or owns one you should be able to look at it and know what im on about

im a newbie here so not reall tech language compatible, but jsut looking for someone to tell me what im looking for? what would be the first point that the psu would be using 12 volt power from the 240?????

Search for Presslabs forward converter.

Most switchers don't work the way you think - they don't convert to 12v and then regulate to the different outputs. Generally they rectify the 240 and then switch that through a transformer using PWM to regulate. You'll probably be replacing the transformer with a custom piece.
