New Ram 512mb not reading right?

Ok so i got new mobo and a new 512 sdram stick but it only reads 284mb of ram... Why is that?

It might be safe to assume that it is a bad stick of ram, but it would help to know the rest of your setup to confirm that though.

also it might be a setting somewhere to limit the amount of memory the system uses.

I'm guessing you have integrated video? If so, how much RAM is allocated to video RAM?

i dont see it.. lol sry im not a newb to computers just cant figure this out... theres AGP aperture size which is set at 32M. Video RAM Cacheable is enabled. Theres something about Video BIOS shadow which is enabled.

If you can allocate RAM, there's a setting for how much RAM to allocate to video. If it's not there, it's a fixed amount and you can't change it.

And did you put DDR RAM into a motherboard that doesn't use DDR per chance?

like said earlier im not a computer newb just carpc. I pulled a stick of 512mb from my friends working computer. and put in along side my 512 and it bumped it up to 312mb.... it should be 1gb.

Well it will never be a 1Gb with 2 sticks of 512Mb and onboard video. But it should be much higher than 312Mb unless it is incompatible.

Are you using high density RAM? Can you run memtest? My current guesstimation would be bad mobo, or more specifically bad RAM controller.

ok so ive gave up on this via motherboard and ordered a new motherboard and ram. Intel D945GCLF 1.6ghz and 1gb ram
