Your car should still be ok to drive even if the computer crash. If you use MS OS, it will. It's the matter of time. I say you get a GPS with screen to keep track of your speed seperately. I wish you luck as well. It will be a hell of a project. Man I wish you are closer. I want to have some idea on how to do fiberglass dash since I so want to re-do my dash in the SVX.

I stand by my opinion that not only will this NOT work, but even if you DO manage to cram in all that hardware into that tiny amount of space, it will look F'ing stupid. But do what you want, its your car.

This is what comes to mind: http://www.drivenbyboredom.com/bling.htm

Also as much as i like to bag on windows its not a requirement that it will crash. It can be extremely stable depending on what your setup is.

Well, the windows setup that will not crash is as follows: Install windows 3.0 (if you still remember it) just don't do anything to it. Don't install anything. It will not crash.

Sounds like you are going all out on this, so I would suggest custom building a dash that you can rotate, with the LCD on one side, and actual gauges on the other. That way, when the PC crashes (cuz it will) you could just flip the dash piece and BANG, you're good to go. I doubt that would be too difficult. A lot less difficult than getting all that info to display on an LCD I would bet.

Wow... Uh. No.

Let's try this, you WONT be able to drive your car until the computer is fully booted, for one, if the guages are on the monitor. Also, 17"???? Are you nuts? You like wearing glasses? You want to be 2 feet from a 17" screen for hours at a time??? It wouldn't even fit!!!
Also, you'll need A LOT of cooling for the tower to be in the dash like that. Remember, the engine is in front of the car. That means the firewall is right behind it. That also means that you'll be putting your tower in low air circulation next to the firewall... BAD idea. You'll burn that sucker out in no time.
As for the PS2 screen, I hooked my PS2 up to the vid in on my ATI Rage 128 Pro, and it looks great.

Don't make fun of my video card. It's old, but it's chuggin' along!

By the way, how do you plan to fit 34 inches of monitor into a dash that's only 45" wide (if that) when you still need to make room for the tower and mounts? You should try this all with a Hummer. It would probably work much better. A jetta is so thin, I'd be afraid to lean on the side of it. (Wider is better)

Would there be a problem with the LCD guages meeting legal specifications?

You are an Idiot to think you can do this, unless you plan to carburate the engine, if you disconnect your stock gauges your car will not run, OBD or not. Do you realize what is behind your dash? I hope you plan on removing the air conditioning, Heater and Defroster, Do you realize how much that will devalue the car, no one will want it, the key to having a great system is simplicity, my computer is in the trunk, with a touchscreen on the dash, music goes into the aux input on my head unit, I also have the OBD software, If my computer breaks I still have gauges and I still have a radio, I don't see any way you are going to make 2 17" monitors look good inside of a car, so is one going above the steering wheel or both off to the side, you're going to have to look down to see how fast you're going. Why in the world would you want to do any of this, quit while your ahead because I promise you will regret it!

^^^ maybe, just maybe, he will learn that it is awesome to display your gauges on the screen, but pointless and a waste of time to make it the primary source of gauge info

Just a couple of small analog guages under or above the screen with a flip down cover should do the trick, all you need until the computer resets is Speed and Possible RPM.
