via mobo

I'm looking at using a via mobo in my car compy. I was wondering if their 800 MHz board would be capable of playing dvd movies, GPS, mp3s or should I just get a 1GHz model? what version of windows, xp or me/98? how much ram? I don't want choppy dvds and such so I'm willing to spend to get good results.

I want any feed back.

Hi, i'm a newb to this board as well, and I ran across this review of the M-10000 via board, and it compares it to Via's earlier models, In terms of speed and performance in multimedia apps. Hope this helps.

I was worried about the same, but when I tried by Shuttle FV24 with an Epia C3-800A, I had no problems watching DivX or playing DVD's. I did find that I was unable to play DivX AND play a DVD at the same time (or mp3's and DivX), but if it ever got overloaded because of my Atlas software chiming in or anything, it'd only skip a frame or two.

However, with the M10000 costing around $160 and the M9000 ~ $157 and M6000 ~ $155, why not just go straight to the top?

check out the web site above. I think that the 800 is a bit light for what I need so think I'll look at the M series boards. I think the difference from the top M board to the low M board is about 40 bucks prob should just get the best. mabye I would be able to run dvd and gps at the same time. sweet

I have the M10000, and love it. It is WAY slower then anything else I use (Not so much in Linux as WinXP.. Damn bloated XP!) but its great for MP3/DIVX/DVD/GPS If I had a copy of Win98 lying around, I would be using it instead. Its a lot lighter to use, less bloat.. But since I don't, I won't use it

mikewrt - If you are using a 7" LCD, I don't think running DVD and GPS at the same time will be a problem, you can't fullscreen both Those LCD's are small, I was amazed at how small mine was when I got it. I love it tho, wouldn't have it any other way. And its main use is GPS (Pimp factor, legallity also) and MP3's. No movies for me yet, other then when hanging out with friends and we are all sitting around in our cars
