Is it possible??

how u doing everyone... Well im a lil stuck atm so thats why im here. As yet i havnt bought nothing yet for my car stereo because i dont no if having a lap top in my car is possible..

ok what i want this lap top to do is just act as a Hard Drive which will transfer songs to the mp3 compatable head unit then it will filter the sound of the song through the speakers that will be connected to the inbuilt amp. Although do i need a special adapter and cable to plug into the lap top to do that? Will the connections im making with the lap top be fixed? because i want to move it around at my leesure. The laptop will be the same as eny lap top just hooked up to a car stereo in retrospect, is it possible?? and if so will it work with every mp3 head unit or only certain ones thanks for ur time

Whoa. Ok, you will need to determine if your head unit has AUX inputs that can be used. You didn't mention whether this was a hard drive unit, or if it's just an MP3 CD playback unit. If it's CD only, then the only way to get music from the laptop through your stereo is to plug in through the AUX inputs. Your stereo may need an adapter before you can use the inputs. Check the manual or the manufacturer's website for what is required. If it will work out of the box with no extras, then all you have to do is connect a cable from the laptop's speaker out (headphone) jack to the stereo's inputs. The cable for this can be found at any electronics store.
Hope I could help!

Yeh the HU wont be a hard drive unit just a wma/mp3/cd player. So in order to do this i will need to buy a head unit that has AUX inputs that is if i dont want to search around for an adapter. Then its just one cable running from laptop to head unit (while having the laptop run on its own power supply). since the laptop isnt playing the music only sending it to the head unit will i still need a high end soundcard or wont it matter? Also does the lap top need special software? or just a basic media player?

correct me if im wrong but basically all the laptop is doing is playing+sending music to the head unit (then speakers) so it can be heard that means ill need a high end sound card hay thx dudes lol think i just anwsered my own question

Keep in mind that it doesnt really need to be high end. It's not something you're going to have much choice about anyhow, since most laptops use baseline integrated audio. To get anything better you're going to have to use something like a Creative Labs Extigy, which, unless you're an audio nut, won't make much difference in the end.

So your trying to have the laptop act as storage for the head unit? Are there any head units that can do that on the market? That will be your first step. All of the ones I have seen play mp3's off of a cd, that is why all of us here are playing the mp3's on the computer and going through the aux audio in of the head unit.

Nar it would be cheaper just to buy a lap top and a aux compatable head unit rather than spending nilly 3 grand on a hard drive head unit
