Will all PC2100 DDR chips work? I want to put a 512mb chip in there, but all the places offering it for $50 aren't guaranteeing compatibility. Anyone run into memory issues of this sort or know a retailer that has a 512 chip that WILL WORK for roughly the same price?

of 4 different manufacturers and sticks everything i've thrown at it has worked. No guarentee without more information on the stick your talking about, but i think it's most likely going to work.

Personally I stay away from generic memory, no need to delibrately make problems for myself. How about Crucial 512MB for $69? Free shipping and lifetime warranty.
