Hey guys: noob here

Sup,

I've been checking out the forum and think that a carputer would be kick ***!

I have done some good old fasioned xbox modding and figure that an xcarputer would really kick ***.

I figure my set up will go something like this;

I take out my headunit and its pocket so there I will have enough room for a nice(cheap 7" screen.
Then I have the xbox mounted under the passenger seat, If it wont fit as is then I can just take it apart. Then I can just run the xbox outputs to the head unit.

Here in lies a problem what am I to do with the head unit? I could mount it in the glove box or something, or just leave it where it is and get an indash screen. Ill have to look at prices a bit to decide what Ill do, also if the screen is in dash I figure that the car will have less of a chance of getting stollen.

The main thing I want my carputer to do is gps. I was wondering if linux had any really good gps software. I need something that will tell me turn by turn what to do becuase I have a really short memory.
Other wise I can run windows programs just slow.

If you guys think the xbox would be a bad idea, what about a a full sized tower in the trunk. I figure it should work good as a fall back plan.

Another thing has eneyone ever had a problem with a cd in the pc drive skipping while driving. Becuase my ordinary head unit skips alot and it was made for it, I think my suspention is too stiff for this stuff.

Welcome to the forums

Most of your questions have been asked, and answered in the past month or so!

Firstly, cheap and good do not go together in the same sentence (apart from that one, or the sentence "cheap displays are rarely any good"). If you want GPS, you want VGA.

Also, check the (current) latest thread in the GPS forum (hint, it's to do with Linux).

Many people remove their head units out entirely, and run the audio outputs directly into an amp, and control the volume via software on the PC.

I personally have not seen any good xbox integrations, but on the extreme, putting a full-sized tower is also not a good idea. I suggest one of the Via Epia motherboards.

For power, you will probably be best suited with an Opus power supply. There is plenty of information on this forum about the power supply.

I figure that Ill just mess around and see what works. I have just about everything but the monitor, and a gps reciver. Ill run an inverter untill I feel Its time for something better.

For the gps I think the gpsmouse thats on ebay should do me fine.

I never put cheap and good into the same sentance. S-video should do me fine for the resolution 300000 dots is probubly more then I need (I dont intend to have my face an inch away from the screen so I can make out the individual street names.) So I think I a good tft screen will work fine. I've seen a few screens in the $150 range that I think should work out fine. Any opinions on price?

Aside from being laughed at a normal pc should work fine from what I read. Besides unless I get a really small pc Ill just stand it up in the trunk and its not like I will be able to use anything on top of it so I see no problem, with microatx.

My Head unit is in the glovebox as a stopgap solution until I pony up the cash for an amplifier and signal preprocessor...if you're starting from scratch and are going to have to buy a head unit with AUX IN then just go straight to a head-unitless configuration, IMHO.

Also, just because I haven't seen it doesn't mean it can't be done, but I've never seen a successful XBOXcarputer. Lotsa people try, but its just not meant for it...I'd go with a tower setup first. Anyways, that's my .02...someone feel free to prove me wrong. If I were you I'd Xbox and maybe see what happens...maybe you'll get lucky!
