Thinking about new Carputer in '04 Tiburon - Questions from a Newb

Hi Guys, thank god i found this forum!! Been looking to do this for a long time! Questions are along the way. Here's what I got so far:

Going go go with the Lilltput 7" touch screen for a monitor....

*** How do I wire in a monitor that has its own AC Cord??***

Will use the Media Engine Frotend
I already have a 120GB Full size HDD lying around.
Guess I'll need a 150 Watt SFX DC-DC Vehicle Power Supply for ATX to power the rig
I will be removing the head unit (Double Din Radio) to install this, so I'll need an AMP to Power the speakers from the sound card.

*** Do you have a recommendation for a AMP that is reasoably priced that will work? ***

***Will I need a crossover or something to make sure that REAR speakers get surround sounds, and Front Speakers get center channel type of sounds?? ***

My current Speaker set up is an infinity system with a Built in trunk Sub, 2 Reg. speakers and 2 tweeters.

Secondly I guess i'll be using a mini ITX MoBo for the PC --

*** Any recommendations for a MoBo with a DECENT graphics chip solution??***

Either 512MB or 1 GB Ram, a DVD ROM Drive -- thinking of a Slot loading Laptop drive, the Panasonic CW-8122-B, 802.11b access, and a GPS System.

Right now tinking about is this will be a trunk mount or "Under the seat" Mount, but DVD drive should be in the console somewhere, and probably a USB port as well. Oh yea, and a D-Link USB radio

Heres a current dash pic:
http://www.hyundaiusa.com/images/sho...buronBig12.jpg

***Being that the Radio is a 350W System, Does that mean i can add 350 watts of electronics to the battery and not effect its life?? ****

*** Being that my power supply is a 150W, i take it that the computer cannot be too strong -- 150W is not a lot for a PC, right?? ***

Thanks for all your help guys, and I will always keep you informed of this porject's progress....

Nice big dash to install a tv huh? Anyway, I don't know much abotu carputers either because I am also a noob but what I plan on doing is getting a HU with aux inputs so I still use the HU for radio and cd and then the soudn card ouput plugs into the aux input then goes to the system. I am still kind of old fashion and I like a niec looking HU.

I believe the Lilliput has a cigarette adapter.

*** Any recommendations for a MoBo with a DECENT graphics chip solution??***

The most popular motherboard for the car is the Via Epia M10000 Nehemia. I don't think it has amazing graphics but definitely enough to play dvds.

*** Being that my power supply is a 150W, i take it that the computer cannot be too strong -- 150W is not a lot for a PC, right?? ***

The Via Epia motherboards are low power. Many people here are using a 90W or 150W Opus power supply.

I think all of these questions are answered on the forums here. On the home page, click the "Community Forums" link and try searching / browsing.

Good luck

I love the car -- get the new Tib - an 03 or an 04 -- Much nicer body style. Got a little ripped off on the HP though -- specs said it was like 215hp, but was told later that is was really like 175 -- so they extended the warranty for free another year -- kinda ****ed at that. But The dash is screaming for a touchscreen computer!!!

Just got a price quote on an '03 blue tiburon. I'll probably be buying it tomorrow or monday, depending when I get my check for my totalled truck! I Can't wait to start hacking my dash to fit my 7" screen.

Ajbrutico, did you get the 6 speaker premium sound with it? If so, do you think its worth the extra cost or should I just go out and buy aftermarket speakers?

WOW. I just found out about this page today, and there is a thread about my model of car. For those of you considering the Tiburon....I have an 03', bought it brand new over a year ago, and I couldn't be happier. It's a sweet ride, you'll get alot of looks. I have nothing bad to say about it, except the inside is small.

Anyay, I am VERY interested on where this thread may go. I know alot about computers, but not much about cars and would love to throw something in the tiburon. I am scared on screwing up the nice interior though.

welcome to mp3car.com kossman. Do some reading on the forums and you will learn all that you need to know about carputers. I'm trying to find the best price on an '03 tiburon now. I'll probably be driving one by wednesday.

04 Tiburon

Thanks for the reply. I have been doing some searching around the site, and it's great. You'll love your Tibby. I'm assuming you'll be throwing a carputer in your Tiburon? Maybe I can ask you for some advice, and what not. I am very interested in where you would mount the different pieces. The interior is small.

Thanks again!

Sure, I'll help you. I plan to mount my 7" screen flush in the dash and either put the pc in the glovebox or in a case in the trunk.

Yea man, got the 6 speaker Infinity in the car -- so i guess to run sound from the PC to the speakers, i need to go through an amp. I plan on getting a slot loading Laptop DVD drive, and installing it right underneath the vent/heat controls -- but actuallh have to see what's behind there though, being that i didnt take off the plastic cover yet. I'm a little nervous about all the electrical work -- made PCs for a long time, but am confused as to how to calc. the voltage (Wattage) that will be used by the PC -- im not very electrically inclined, and if i screw all this up, then the CarPC idea will be no more -- cant keep buying the same part again if i blow something out.

laptop possibilities

Any reason anything cool can't be done with a mounted laptop?

Thanks for the advice guys, I ended up getting a white '04 Tiburon. 4 cylinder 5 speed. The carputer is going in as soon as I figure out how to mold the TM702L into my dash!

That Infinity system will soon be the bane of your existance. The system utilizes stock amplifiers. You'll have to buy two new amplifiers if you want to re-use all the stuff. One for the interior speakers and one for the sub. You could technically re-use all the stock amps and stuff, but chances are it'd sound like crap and the amps would end up roasting themselves anyhow.
