There is a pcb that connects to a laptop hdd and outputs the mp3 file, along with a alpha-numeric display as a addon... But what was the page and the thread....

MPXplay, Good dos software. That's what I started out with was MPXplay with the MPXF frontend. I used a 4x20 character LCD and an IRman remote controller. It worked perfect for the time being. I used an old 60mhz processor 12mb ram and a 2 gig hdd. Had it mounted under my front seat. It's good if your looking for inexpensive. I even had a TSR that would show the Long file names: "The Used - Buried Myself Alive.mp3" instead of "theuse~1.mp3" Worked great for me. Boot time was about 4 seconds. MPXplay will also save where you left off, so when you boot back up, it will start in the same place, just like a car cd player. It was good. I have lots of experience with it so if you need help or something, let me know. email removed

Yeah, this thread. Look at what I posted higher up, I hadn't seen it here before - but now that I search I do see it. :P

Neo Car Jukebox Player
I had one of these in my car for 2 1/2 years before it bit the dust. Good player. Can be purchased sans hdd - add your own. Mine worked through an FM modulator. The random algorithm did suck, a bit, but otherwise solid.
Replaced with a mini-itx carputer.

I had two of those. Pretty awesome idea. Though I did flash the neo once, and it never worked again. If you do go with the Neo, see if they will flash it with the newest stuff, so you don't have to. Sucks when it doesn't work right.

It`s based on a Micropic processor and the firmware is similar to prjc player.

When I used to run a carputer, MPXPLAY was the best simple program I had used. I never got to the remote phase, but was using a keypad. Boots fast, easy to use, and had good sound quality. Even had CROSSFADING. If you only want mp3 and wav files, this is a great way to go.
All this talk is making me want to go back to running a carputer. I knew I came back here for a reason.
