Plain and Simple

Hey Guys,
I am a newbie so dont get mad if i dont get it the first time

I am 16 just got a my licence and a old pickup truck. I was thinken of putting in like a new stero cd player but plainly said i dont got all the money for all that junk that would be cool. i am good with computers and electronics and have tons of mp3s, i want to have the cool thing in my truck so people would be like sweet

now to the point
i got some old computer parts and stuff laying around. my sister has a portable cd/mp3 player so that is were i got the idea.

I would like to build a cd/mp3 player out of old computer parts and make it small like a cd changer so i can fit it behind the seat in the pickup.

Do you guys have any ideas of how i can do this make it small, reliable and pretty sweet

If you already have computer stuff, you'll just need to build a computer, buy an invertor, buy a small RGB LCD screen, and get the creative labs remote for $3. Should be less than $200 total.

alright this is actually all i want the thing to do
be a cd player cause there is none and also to play mp3 cds

I got an hp motherboard with 100mhz processor and i think 64mb of ram a little much for what i just want it to do,

i have looked in to it what i want is the motherboard the sound card and the cd rom , i am looking in to dc to dc converts cause i want this to be small and i have hook ups for the parts and for building one

the next questions are what should i run as an operating system i was thinken dos but i got a new laptop that i am running these things out and testing them but it sounds like crap and and dos makes the songs sound bad

another question is should i run a hard drive or is there anything else that could be available for start up like a floppy running linux i want small/convent and low on power

i dont need a lcd screen i will just have the playlist probably printed out and input i got some buttons rigged up to the com port

please give any input i need all of it i can get

if all you are doing is playing cds and cds with mp3s on them its pretty easy to just buy a head unit, there are pleanty of cheap head units that do this, and it saves a lot of hastle building a full pc for just this. i might even end up cheaper in the long run (remember you can run a head unit straight to speakers but you have to use some sort of amplifier to amplify the signal coming straight from a pc)

That is relatively expansive for a low-lever carputer... 150$
I tough it would be cheaper.

You're right.

I just thought it was a nice beginner project when I was searching through alternative MP3 integration sources.

With a cost of a CD-based MP3 headunit being less than $200, it would be a better way to go.
