New to the scene!
I am currently researching on how to do this sort of stuff in my vehicle. I have a decent knowledge foundation with computer hardware and software and would like to find good deals on raw LCD panels, as well as suggestions for a virgin to this technology. I would like to build my own system and would like as much information on how to do it the best and most user friendly way possible. If I bought, say a Laptop LCD monitor on eBay, would it be possible to rewire it for s-video or composite inputs or even something that can be compatible with a Carputer? What sort of power supply will I need? I was thinking of going with a Windows XP Pro OS as well as a multimedia remote (suggestions?) Any and all information for this stuff would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks guys,
This stuffs incredbile!

getting a laptop monitor to work without the laptop = expensive.
i would recommend spending some time in the lcd forum to see what people are using. there are a couple nice screens to choose from depending on your requirements and budget.
my advice is to try to get a vga screen that is at least 7". but it will also depend on the space you have for mounting.
spend a lot of time planning, and it will go a lot smoother once you start buying and installing parts
oh, and welcome...

What that English?
Did you deliberately use poor grammar? And what do you mean by : "You wont get any extra points by getting you paragraph look 'nice' " ? That's such poor English that I can't even understand what it is you were insulting me about... And extra points with who? I didn't know there was a score, *****. And yes, I did notice the And I am sure at one point in your mere exsistance that you had some questions about this sort of technology.
Thanks for the informative reply, ***.

okay...
True. I was thinking of going with a 7" VGA. Will I need to purchase a controller as well? Or is VGA the defining feature that will allow it to work. Is VGA the standard desktop monitor cable? I also would like to know how the quality of sound is from these sort of units. I am thinking of building a 600Mhz carPC. What sort of Motherboard do you suggest? How hard do you think it would be to hardwire all of the components such as HD, and audio outputs rather than using the motherboards standard connectors?
Thanks...
I would like to have this whole system planned completely out before purchasing anything...[QUOTE=Sh0cker]at least you got my point ...

Don't worry about them, every noobie get flamed. I don't understand why, probably because they were flamed as noobies?
If you buy a complete VGA unit you won't need a controller. Check out www.digitalww.com for some ideas on LCDs. VGA is the "standard" for pc computers, it's the 15 pin d-sub cable.
The quality of sound from a car-puter is generally the same as from your desktop. You probably already knew that it's mostly based on bitrates of your digital music. Low bit rate = crappy sound.
Hard wireing the connections shouldn't be too hard as long as you are decent with a soldering iron but why would you want to? My motherboard came with the IDE ribbon cables, powe supply with power cables etc. You don't need to hard wire any of your connections. Another reason you might consider not doing that is the possibility of breaking something. Also, what if your hard drive crashes? Do you want to try to hard wire another hard drive? Probably not. Trust me, you don't want to hard wire anything.

I am also a newbie, but the reason you got flamed is your giant blue text. That doesn't say "I have a decent knowledge foundation with computer hardware and software" to me

I don't know about anyone else, but I prefer to read plain black text in the default size. If you need to emphasize certain words or sections of your post by chaning the font, go right ahead.

If you want to mention something not saying "I have a decent knowledge foundation with computer hardware and software", How about not knowing what a VGA cable is..... Just my $.02

I'm speshiul...
Thank you guys for the great insight into my stupidity. I do know some stuff, uuuh, I guess. I don't really know the names of ****, but...
Oh well, anyhow, I got an idea of putting small lcd panels in my sunvisors... Since there really isn't a good place to house a large one anywhere, plus, mounting them in the visors would add a level of security, although would take away from the viewing pleasure... What do you guys think? I also thought of maybe relocating the OBC and making a housing for a screen in its old location... But then the shifter would get in the way, and I would have to look down to view the screen... Where is a good place to mount the Carputer itself? The trunk? I wanna make sure it runs cool (no pun intended, no, I'm not gay)

I'm confused. A majority of the people here are using mini-itx boards (me included) but we still had to build the pc's...are you just going to buy a prebuilt one from the mini itx shop or....?
