DVD Rips?

I've "DVD rip" and "DVD copy" and a bit too.

I need and idiots guide to throwing a DVD on my HDD to play. I can copy a DVD no problem onto a CD-R or DVD-R. I have in the past. But I dont understand how to get it on a HDD as a single playable file.

I decode it (to what? using what?)
Then encode it to divX (using what?)

I currently am playing with DVD Sqeeze. I have a DVD down to about
4 gigs. It's still a bunch of VOB files. Now what? Basically (I think) all I did was crop the DVD to it's minimum before decoding.

Everything I've found so far is too complex for my primative brain. Someone enlighten me please

You say that you know how to rip it to a CD, so why not just rip it and leave it on the computer instead of burning it? Maybe I am not understanding you right.
As far as programs, I like the tutorial at www.clonead.co.uk and they have all the links for all the free programs that you will need also.
