My 2 cents

For beginners they may not have the know h ow to configure a home network to get it to work so the best idea i think is a rewritable cd drive, then they can take whatever they want to the car and load it up in minuites (i use it)
Also alien8,

for $150 cdn you can buy 1000 feet of upt cat 5 100 mhz cable.

Alien8 'My Knowledge is to be respected' ha ha - have not laughed so much in ages!

But seriously, the best tips for beginners (which this was meant to be about when it started) is just to look around at as many different peoples sites and get ans many different ideas from al of the varied setups (as you will be hard pushed to find any that are identical) and then make your own mind up.

Only YOU know what you want and how much you have to spend. By looking at other peoples designs from the expensive and professional to the 'chucked in a box' design - there will be ideas from every one.

But just remember, MP3's are NOT CD quality so you don't HAVE to spend out and buy the most expensive of everything - it's entirely down to your choice.

I thank you. Respect. Bo.

If Alien8 was as smart as he says hed be making enough money to build a truly professional system. The truth is that hardly anybody can afford to do it the best way possible either on the engineering, audio, or electrical side of it so you take the money you got and choose your priorities. different people have different levels of good enough. If there was really one best way the hundreds of auto mp3 enthusiasts would be using it. I could say my system is way better than yours but im probably spending 4x as much or more and nobody really cares whether im using wireless LAN or ethernet etc in the spirit of the forum heres my tips:
-plan on spending a lot more than budgeted
-make sure what you are doing will work and not fry your hard work when you start it up
-review all your options and choose the best for your application(use others' websites and learn from their experiences
-dont skimp on the very important aspects if you can avoid it
lrm

I'm a newbe to the MP3car scene, but I do know this. For some time, I've watched many hardworking individuals take old computer parts and craft them into works of art producing sound and light at a fraction of the cost of "commercial" mp3 equipment. Each system is designed to the individual's tastes and requirements. For me, a simple MP3 player, using a Gateway P100 motherboard, win98, winamp set for random play, housed in a custom case with no lcds or video or inputs, a pure music box running through aux on the headunit that I turn off and on with a flick of a switch.

It's a simple system concept and because I drive a lot for my job, my needs are for simplicity and durability and an escape from radio wastland filled with never ending commericals. What I want and what I can afford are two different things... so if a tape adapter must be used because I can't afford to upgrade my head-unit right away, so be it. If a pull the system and upload songs by floppy drive then reinstall it to update the play list, so be it. Your system works for you, mine will work for me.

My stuff is free, old computer parts in the garage that will be crafted into a working mp3 store-house with no eye candy. My little Nissan pickup won't hold much more and my budget doesn't allow for more.

For Alien8 to assert that his experiences in any way, shape, or form, are the only way or best way newbies can do a system is just his own personal opinion. I see the whole concept of having fun while building something totally unique to each of our own tastes being slammed as inferior. Your tips for beginners are good, but may not work for everyone's vehicle, budget, or taste. Sorry Alien8, my opinion is that you need to grow up and cut people some slack...and that's the beauty of a forum atmosphere...we all can agree to disagree...

Wow.

Let me say that again...

Wow.

I mean really.

Wow.

I think we all deserve a big pat on the back... Look at how grown up and responsible this forum has become since the hedonistic days of 1999...

Anyway, thanks for the resurrection Sannis, this thread had me laughing out loud for a good five minutes... What a read!

(As an aside, I'd like to say that my replacement "CD-Changer" has a 10.4" touch screen VGA display, GPS navigation, DVD/CD player, OBDII interface, automated DJ, text-to-speech with a library of my favorite books, wireless ethernet, 40Gb laptop drive, is embedded in the dash where my head unit used to be, runs cleanly off a straight DC-DC converter and last but not least bypasses my (non-existent) head-unit and goes directly to my amp using the cars built in wiring harness)

And if I were to start a thread like this one for my own tips, it would have only one tip...

Think for yourself.

Sad that some people can be so narrow minded to assert that their ideas are the way, and the only way.

I agree with novalis, "think for yourself."

I would say that there's no need to apologize for taking the time to actually read way back into the threads before posting. Too bad all the newbies don't do that.

And . . . it was a fun read. Dex

The one thing I agree 100% with is the tape adapter. Unless it's a laptop on your passenger seat, a hardwire is so much more elegant. But then again, I'm a big fan of clean installs.
