Eth.. I can buy 1000 feet of Cat5e cable for $70 and a decent Intel NIC for $15. With eth, I can achieve speeds of +4Mb/s from my P2/400MHz (Linux) to my Duron 1.3GHz (Linux) servers, via Apache. Using Samba I can get 5Mb/s So I think eth is plenty fast.

Using wireless, 802.11g, I get 1.5Mb/s from my servers to my computer (Wired -> AP -> Wireless) so there is nothing wrong with that. So when I start up my car, and I am thinking about what to listen to, I can be syncing my songs.. If I have a new DIVX to load onto the system, I could just bring it on CD or wait for the WLAN to transfer it (Compressed, prob 5min..)

About five years ago I bought a 150' Cat5 crossover for 25.00 I thought that was a good deal. They are not difficult to create if you want to. You can even find a web page that will tell you how. but If you make sure that both ends are wired the same, then it will work for you. I'm looking for the website now.

Pinout for the RJ45 connector (suggested wire colors)

That's a straight cable, for crossover I think you flip the orange/white brown/white. I think! I usually just buy what I need!

What color is where doesn't matter at all for a cable. You just need to match the pins up, and for crossover's you flip 6 with 8 or something like that..

there is a reason why they use a certain colour layout.
1. if you have a 100m long network cable running from one end of a building to another, makes it easier to remember how the plug should go, rather than checking again
2. the colors are in pairs. the way they have been made is so that they dont get too much interferance from outside sources/each other if they are done correctly.

Yes, but most cables that companys tech's install are color-coded themselves.. At least that is what I have found when working with techs of a DSL company.. Their DSL company has each tech use the same code, but its not the norm its one they like

just a little question? off topic but, DSL just became available in my area and they want $100+ for a modem. My question is will any DSL modem work with my local phone companys basic 512 DSL service? Thanks

The cable pinouts last posted were for a roll over cable. That is used for connecting to a router or switch in the console port.

The industry standard for cable color code is

white/orange
orange
green / white
blue
blue / white
green
brown /white
brown

for a straight thru cable, pin 1 -1, 2 -2. 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7, 8-8
for a crossover cable pin 1-3, 2-6, 3-1, 4-4, 5-5, 6-2, 7-7, 8-8

guitar333 - As far as I know, it SHOULD. I can use any cable modem for my cable line.. If I were you, get one that is good not cheap, if you want to *raise* your speed at all - You can telenet/etc into it and have some fun

Actually, it does matter to an extent. You can use any custom color code you want, but the type of cable does matter big time. The militry uses the color code I posted ealier because it gives off the least about of emi. The cross over cable (see prior post) is used to connect to devices of a like nature ie. 2 computers or 2 routers/switches/hubs. A straight through cable is for unlike devices ie.computer to router/switch/hub.

But who needs cables anyways, lets all go out and buy 801.11G capable equipment lol
