Hardware Sales in Aust.
Hi All.
I see that there are a few aussies here on this forum and would like to ask you all a question.
Where do you source all of you equipment??? Everything from PC's to DC PSU's, Screens and extras!!!
Hoping to start my first CarPC in the next couple of weeks.... going to be a long project.
On a side note: Has anyone put a CarPC into a Series 1 Landrover Discovery???
Many thanks,
Lee Pryor

if you trust it, ebay is always a good start, i use a place called pccasegear.com.au for things like lcd modules (alpha\numeric) aftermarket cpu,cpu coolers&paste ect... it all depends on where you are too... im not too sure about if they have a store there or not but msy.com has some nice and cheap stuff, but nothing in the micro-axt or barebone style... warcom.com is another place... or just go to google.com.au and restrict your searches to pages from australia below the search bar, then look for whatever you want...
just try and search, seeing as you have only ever made 1 post... your realy going to get flamed and scorned for not searching for yourself... the veterans on this forum get pretty ****ed off pretty quickly in my opinion here, so dont instigete em by not searching yourself
good luck with your carputer and dont forget to post pics and info when its done

Thanks very much guys.... I have done a lot of searching over the past couple of days about 20hrs in 3 days!!! I can't remember the amount of searches i have compiled on this site.... it really is tops!!
I was more trying to compile a list and use perfered suppliers as recommended here.
Thanks very much for the input.
As for the OT, yes... we do a fair bit of beach work here. I am working on a suspension idea here where I will suspending the hdd in rubber bands.
Once finished I will post details.
Cheers,
Lee

Don't forget the mp3car store. Good place to find the hard to get things.

Same places I get most of my PC components:
- Umart (they're very close to work and always within a few dollars of the cheapest places, for most things)
- AusPCMarket (for certain things you just can't find anywhere else easily)
- EYO (they were the cheapest for my M12000, and the only ones with any stock. Also close to home. )
- Work
I bought my Opus from Corrospec (after two friends' recommendations), and my USB GPS mouse from eBay.

Maybe if you're using an ATX motherboard and something power-hungry like a P4...but it's not terribly suitable for a mini-ITX board.
Sure, it's 250w..but it's humungous (ATX-sized), expensive (last time I checked it was $300AUD), and does it have the shutdown capabilities of the Opus (genuine question)?
Cheers,
- Febs.

dude, if only i knew...... , and what do u mean huge? i was under the impression that it was an 80mm fan hanging off the back, making it look about the same size as any other desktop PSU, and i am also pretty sure it is 150, not 250 watts
quote from page:"THE TOTAL OUTPUT OF +5V DC AND +3.3V DC MUST LESS THAN 150W goes to show that you cant just assume the stats are bosting true figures unless you read on, a genral warning for all products i think
i just thought some people would be more comfortable getting stuff from australia.... and there are patriotic extremests out there who will pay more for less coz it has a aussie sticker on it
i myself are using a AMD XP2000+ processor and full atx motherboard... i guess you save on parts but loose money on suplying the beast with power
not to sound too defancive or anything, but i never remember anyone specifying that they only want mini-itx componentry....

Yeah, that's my point. It's "huge" compared to an Opus, or other Mini-ITX PSU.
Of course some people run full-sized desktops in their car, but a lot run Mini-ITX boards too, with very small cases. A lot of these people use Opus PSUs because of their size (as well as their ability to do everything).
My entire case (including motherboard, PSU, wireless PCMCIA and HDD) is approx 25cm x 20cm x 5cm. Try fitting a full-size ATX PSU in there.
Of course the Zantech one is going to be appropriate for some people, but I wouldn't really call it an "Opus alternative".

Definitely.
Being at the mercy of couriers and international shipping sucks. I'm waiting on my Opus atm, which the courier has had for over a week. Also don't have my GPS module yet...but that should be here very soon.

I'm also an Aussie outfitting my GQ patrol with a PC :-)
Yes, I do take it off road.
I've been buying components in the US. The PSU and slot-load DVD I didn't find in Australia, so I ordered from the states ( http://www.digitalww.com/b3.htm). The Lilliput 8'' screen will come from the dealer in Honk Kong who sells them via ebay australia. The Jetway motherboard came from a store in Murambeena in Melbourne, Jetway are distributed all over.
I'm still uncertain where I'm gonna get a decent low-height and light-weight heatsink around here.
